Okay lets try this for the third time. What year did they make the T/C Renegade? Do they still make a Renegade?

If TC's web site is current, the Renegade Hunter is currently in production.

Thanks Tim

I am working on a trade for a 50 cal Renegade. If it shoots anything like my 54 I will be one good shooting gun slinger.

Thanks Don

Just be aware that there have been some production changes and some Renegades, including the current factory ones, have a rubber recoil pad, single trigger and possibly a QLA barrel.  If you are like me and like the steel butt plate, double set triggers and a regular barrel, you may not be happy with one of the newer Renegades.

The Double trigger is 1/2 the fun and allure. Thanks for the info.

My renegade has the single trigger and Metal recoil pad. I put a slip on Pacmyer pad on it. I am very happy with mine since I put the GM 50 cal stainless steel LRH barrel on it.  I am getting 1500 FPS with a 410 gr Hornady Great plains bullet and 100 gr of Pyrodex RS.
Velocity     Energy
1500         2048  @ muzzle
1378         1730  @ 50 yards
1271         1470  @ 100 yards
1179        1265   @ 150 yards
1105        1111   @ 200 yards
1046        996     @ 250 yards

I don't know what most guys would call good accuracy but this is good enough for me.  It has a Lyman 57 sml rear sight and a 17 aml front sight.

:oWOW :o Thats a good group Idaho Ron!!!! Is that a typical one or the best one? Makes my decision on getting a .58 Renegade all the more better. Good shooting.

Understand that Idaho Ron is using a GM drop-in barrel in his Renegade that has 1:28" rifling, specially for shooting conicals.  He also has a .50cal. not a .58.  On the other .58cal thread, you mentioned you were probably going to get a .58cal Renegade from T/C's Fox Ridge.  That rifle would have a 1:48" twist barrel.  You may possibly be able to special order it with a 1"60" twist T/C barrel but this is really roundball only barrel.  Make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

IMO, the best shooting .58cal. Renegade is an early Renegade stock and lock mated with a  GM 1:70" barrel.  I have one and it is a superb roundball shooter.  If you are determined to shoot conicals, the T/C stock 1:48" barrel will shoot them pretty well but probably not as well as the GM 1:28" barrel, which doesn't come in anything but .50cal, which makes sense because you really don't need to shoot larger caliber conicals for hunting.

KW, also be aware that TC ONLY makes a 1:48" twist in their .58cal...if you want a drop-in round ball barrel, GM makes the 1:70" to drop into a Hawken or Renegade, not TC...so if you buy a .58cal from Fox Ridge and plan to install a round ball barrel on it, you'll be setting aside a new $200 barrel for nothing.  As an alternative, you could just buy the new stock & lock from Fox Ridge, then buy the .58cal RB drop-in barrel from GM.

Or, you might consider buying a used .50 or .54cal Renegade on an auction for a couple hundred bucks, then buy a new GM .58cal round ball drop in barrel....for less money than a single new .58cal from Fox Ridge, you'll have a Renegade with two different caliber barrels to use...if it was me, I'd get the used one in .50cal for reasonably inexpensive weekend range shooting throughout the year...(.58cal balls are twice as expensive as .50/.54cals)

A used TC muzzleloader is the safest, lowest risk buy anybody can make because of TCs real, lifetime warranty regardless if the original owner or not.

I think the Renegade came out in 1974. The new ones are 50 cal. only and have a single trigger and a rubber butt pad. I have two 58's I got from fox ridge outfitters. One is a cap and the other is a flinter. They both shoot very well with roundballs.

Oh yea I understand about the T/C barrel and stuff. Was just making a comment for the possibilities of one rifle. Going to have to try that E-Bay route though. Thanks for the idea.

I have shot 10 groups with this gun at 100 yards to prove to me the accuracy. All 10
averaged together is 1.25"
Here is a couple more but these were 50 yard  groups.
This group was a group at 50 yards that I was not real wild about. I didn't like way the
385's shot. but I never shot it with 100 gr. My gun likes 100 gr of pyrodex. I have to post links instead of pictures beause the site won't let me post this many I think.
http://www.hunt101.com/img/389442.jpg

Again this is a 90 gr load with 410 hornady's at 50 yards
http://www.hunt101.com/img/389444.jpg

This load was my 410 gr Hornady bullets with 90 gr. I liked this load but when I went to
100 yards the average was about 1.5"
This was probably one of the better ones.
http://www.hunt101.com/img/393224.jpg

I increased the powder to 100 gr and the groups tightened up. I have three out of the 10
Accuracy groups that measure .750, .850, .402

This is what happened when I went to 110 gr
http://www.hunt101.com/img/393234.jpg

This load opened right up so I never went any farther with it.  With the power behind
these 410's I could hunt anything on this contenent with NO problem.  Another this is the
sights. I love these lyman sights. I am letting everyone know because they are so good.
My point in posting what a 50 would do with a GM barrel was because Remington Mag
said he might be getting a 50. Also I posted this because even a single trigger renegade
can shoot well.

When I compaired my load in my 50 to a 58 out of my book I was amazed. in the gun
digest black powedr loading Manual I found a 58 cal load with a 560gr maxi hunter. This
was out of a TC big boar. the gun listed a 560 gr bullet
100 gr RS
MV 1290 ME 2070,,,100 yard velocity 1010 100 energy 1269

110 gr RS
MV 1345  ME 2250,,, 100 yard velocity 1036 100 energy 1335

120 gr RS
MV 1351  ME 2270,,, 100 yard vel       1040  100 yard energy 1345.

The figures I am using here are from a book. My figures are from my OHLER 35 and a
ballistic program.
I find it interesting that when you compair the 50 and the 58 with these bullets the 50
smokes the 58. I guess that using the right bullet the 58 would do better. I am just using
what I was able to find, but over several 58 loads what I can determin is that if a guy
chooses a 58 it is because he likes the kick  ;D   Like harryo said " you really don't need to
shoot larger caliber conicals for hunting.  "
AMEN brother.   Ron

KW, my gun was a ebay gun I got for under 100 dollars. I never wanted the original barrel at all so the deal was good for me. I wanted a gun for our traditional hunts here in Idaho. The gun was cheep the barrel and sights cost a bunch. here is the gun

Nice lookin' new model there, Ron. I've got one of the old ones with the double trigger, problem is it's a .56 Smoothbore. It'd make a nice 28 gauge shotgun if it didn't have that danged double trigger. Now if only I could make up my mind to cast some RBs with the mold that came with it and try it as a musket.  ::)

Idahoron, that is some pretty good shooting. I can't do that well with my scoped inline.
You are putting out some pretty serious foot pounds with that big 410 gr. slug.
I bet it has a good kick.
Aim small don't miss.

It does have a kick. The reason I used a slip over pad was to make the stock a bit longer. In fact I wish it was a bit longer than it is now. The thing I like about this gun is it is legal for our traditional hunts, and my load is good for anything that walks the hills, or valleys of Idaho, if not all of the lower 48. I got the idea of this rifle after seeing a story on the Whitworth. This is my poor mans version of that rifle.   Ron
