Mag extension, a ghost ring sight, a couple hundred round of #4 buck and you should just about be set.

One thing about magazine extensions is that you have to grind down the "dimples" at the end of the magazine tube on the inside. The dimples are there to hold the spring retainer in place. The only reason I bring this up is because I did it to my 870 that I also use for deer hunting. Believe it or not removing the dimples effected my accuracy like you wouldn't believe. I went from shooting 2.5 to 3 in groups at 100 yards to shooting ONE FOOT groups.

I did switch barrels and thought the new barrel was the problem. I live an hour from Remington's main plant in Ilion, NY so I took the barrel back there and they gave me a brand new one. Went to the range with the new barrel and it shot the same. Remington wanted me to bring them the whole shotgun. I did and they re stamped the dimples in the mag tube, put a new spring retainer and factory spring back in it and guess what..........2.5 to 3 inch groups again!

They told me that the spring retainer was to hold the spring in the mag tube when you changed barrels so it wouldn't fly out and also to keep the spring pressure off the magazine cap (big nut that holds the barrel on the mag tube).

The best part of this is that Remington never charged me a cent to fix this and it wasn't even their problem. If you're going to use this shotgun for self defense only and will never shoot slug through it then go ahead and put the mag extension on it. If you might use it with slugs.......remember my story. I wouldn't have believed that removing the dimples would cause this if it didn't happen to me.

My 870 has a mag extension, a weapons light and a folding stock. It is a smooth bore with rifle sights. It cuts the "10" ring out of the B-27 at 50yds with Federal slugs. Shoots buckshot pretty well too. I used it for a patrol shotgun untill we went to patrol rifles. For me, it's about as good as it gets in a shotgun!

The weapons light is built into the forearm. It's a great tool. A bit on the expensive side. I would reccomend a clamp on light of some type with a pressure switch for a cheaper option.

I stuck a 20 inch smoothbore barrel with sights on mine. I put on a B-Square scope mount and an affordable Tasco Propoint red dot, and a Choate mag extension and stock. I tried putting a Mini-Mag light on it but the recoil pulls the bulb out of the socket after a few shots. Oh well. Recoil is pretty harsh with slugs, so the next step might be the Cop-Stock.

It's a good overall defense gun. I've made a few interesting discoveries along the way. First off, I always use a full choke tube. I don't know why cylinder bore is so popular with the home defense crowd because the "pattern" isn't going to be more than an inch or two in diameter at typical home defense distances anyway, so you still need to aim (that's what the red dot is for). But assuming a problem was outside at a longer distance, the full choke still puts out a useful pattern to maybe 50 yards or a little more.

Another interesting discovery for me, is that the full choke does a wonderful job of stabilizing Brenneke KO slugs. Not only are they cheap enough to practice with, they're also FAR more accurate than anything else I've tried. Accurate enough at 100 yards to make you ask if it's a rifled barrel. They said they're safe through any choke and I took them at their word. I have nearly 500 of them through the choke so far without a single issue.

I think my next step is to find a red dot and recoil resistant light system that use AA batteries. I don't like depending on exotic batteries when I have several hundred nicad AA's and a stack of small solar chargers. I like the idea of being able to operate away from stores if need be.

I have a side mounted Kobra on my AK and it runs on AA. Unfortunately, their weaver mount model doesn't.

I stuck a ProPoint on mine, along with a light. Quick daytime target acquisition and the ability to illuminate and target at night. Also lets you shoot slugs accurately. Other than an extended mag, that's about all you need. The extended tube isn't really even that important if you do tactical reloads as you shoot. But they're not expensive, so why not?

:cb2: Your 20 in. is great. Why do you need an extention tube? How many times to you plan on missing? If it was a combat shotgun, and you were in an extended firefight, or a LEO on patrol, heck yeah, but not too many home invaders are gonna hunker down and battle it out with a home owner armed with a shotgun. They're gonna be lookin' for the fastest way out.

Cheap light sourceĀ—a good flashlight and duct tape. :)

Hi, greetings to my American friends! I'm up in Halifax, I was practically given a Remington 870 recently,  ;D an ex-Ontario police gun. I was thinking on getting a 20" cylinder barrel with slug sights, (came with out a barrel) that should be more firepower than I will ever need, I won't be going with the magazine extension, I did think about it for a while. If I want something like that I'll probably spring for either a new Ithaca 37 tactical or an old one with the ramp front sights and long magazine. I do plan on putting slugs through it for fun, do you think it should have a Limbsaver put on it? It's got the Remington pad on there. I'm also Dutch-fisted, is there any safety issues that I should know about? Is there an oversized safety available for lefties?
