talley lightweight one-piece mount
« on: September 01, 2006, 06:28:04 AM »
I was wondering if anybody had some 1st hand experience w/these :http://www.talleyrings.com/al.htm  I've got a Rem 700 Titanium in .308 on layaway, and would like to go with a lighter mounting set-up as long as they don't allow the scope to slip.  I plan on lapping the rings.  I'm thinking of something in the 2-7/2.5-8 magnification range.  Just looking for 1st hand experiences good or bad.  Thanks!

Sorry... I don't have first hand experience with them, but I have heard very good things about them.  Call Talley, I have spoken to them before and they do not recommend lapping their rings.

Thanks for the info!  I guess if they don't line up correctly I could just send them back(if I decide to go w/them).  I wonder why they don't want you to lap them.  CYA, perhaps?  I've lapped most everything else I have a scope on, but I think everything else is in steel rings.  Anybody have any suggestions for a lightweight mount other than Talley?

I think weavers will be the next lightest. I just ordered a set of the talleys for a blr. When they come I'll post my impressions. Byron  ;D

I have the Talley one-piece rings on my Rem 7600 and really like them. I wonder how we survived without lapping rings for so many years? I've managed over 30 years. ;)

Thanks for the responses guys!  I look forward to hearing your impressions of them pastorp.  Thanks for the firsthand info Dave!  They look like great mounts.  Very clean lines in my opinion.  The main reason I've been lapping my rings is I've gotten a few Rugers that you could run your fingernail along the inside of the ring and feel high spots.  Kinda makes a mess of a scope if you ever decide to move it to another gun and the rings don't line up w/the ring marks.  I've been lucky in that I haven't had any guns yet that had the scope mount holes drilled off center.  Anyway, thanks for the info guys, really appreciate it!

Lapping seems to be the latest craze some gun writers are going on about. I'm sure at times it's needed. For off center holes I'd go with Burris Signature rings with ecentric inserts. I've had to shim one scope and it was the scope, not the mounts. IMHO the Talleys will work perfectly for you in weight savings and looks.

I do have one rifle that wears the Burris rings w/the inserts.  I like that setup, just wanted something a little lighter to go along w/such a lightweight rifle.  Weaver rings might be on the light side, I just think the Talleys look better.  Not to mention the fact that the lower half of the ring and the base are 1 piece.  That's just one less set of screws to worry about coming loose.  Thanks again guys!

I have them on my Kimber Montanta 8400 in .300WSM.  They are lightweight and have held up great.  I recommend them.

Thanks for the input Zachary!  If yours have held up well on a lightweight .300 WSM, a .308 Win should be no problem!

Redawg, as promised I'm postion inital impressions of the one piece Talley scope mounts. I recieved mine yesterday and mounted them last evening. They are very light and appear to be top quality as far as machining, finish, and tolerances. They are thicker than weaver and some other steel rings.

I like them, but not sure I like them that much better than my weaver bases and rings. I will use them on the rifle I purchased them for and may buy more to replace my leupold one piece bases and windage adjustable rings because the talleys are so much lighter. Don't think I will replace any weaver bases and rings with them. IMO there just isn't much wrong with the weaver system. Regards, Byron  ;D

Thanks for the update pasorp!  I'm glad to hear you like them!  I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the Talleys when I get the gun off the lay-awake program, I mean lay-a-way program.  I don't doubt the Weaver mounts and rings are a solid setup, they're just not pleasing to my eye.  Thanks again for the input guys!
