Sterilization and Yeast
« on: September 19, 2006, 02:41:36 AM »
I am new to winemaking, I am not very computer savvy and have had limited results searching the NET for information. I would like to know what to use for sterilization and where to get it, also what is a good source for wine yeast(for future reference). Is there any forums for beginners in the winemaking arena. Any help would be very much appreciated..........thanks.............lb

DC I dont know much about this board, if there is a private message capability here, send the link you spoke of to me that way. Thanks...........lb

I got into brewwing a few years ago, here is a west coast site that can answer some of your questions. I have been to there store and found these people to be helpfull {at least on a local level} the site should have lots of good info to get you going they cater to both wine and beer folks.  I have nothing to do with this establishment, hope this helps have a good day.     D.C.

Your concern about Sterlization is right on target for a beginner.  ALL supplies MUST be clean before you start any batch.  Try to never lose that thought.

When I got into Winemaking, all I ever did was pour boiling hot water in the jugs that I used for the hobby.  I used Hot, Soapy water and a Scoobie to scour out the inside of the jugs.  And rinsed them thoroughly.

Now, even though I still use hot, soapy water, I mostly use Denture Tablets to Sterilize the inside of the jugs after they are cleaned.   Believe it or not, denture tablets have a form of bleach, which is a germicide.  8 to 10 Tablets to a gallon does the trick, let set a few days then rinse thoroughly.

When I started, I had my share of flops.  Now I rarely have a batch go bad.

Even though I do not usually recommend Brand Names here on GBO, I will tell you that Red Star Yeasts offer a sizable choice of Wine Yeasts.  Wine Hobby Shops sometimes have a website for internet customers to order supplies on-line.

As for the help you seek, this forum may help you more than some other website, because the help here can be ongoing and as often as you need it.  However, if you type: Home WineMaking in "Google" or any other Search Engine, I am positive you will get well over 1,000,000 responses.

I do not offer links here because other websites do not have advertising agreements with the ownership here.

If you need help, just ask.  If I, or anyone else can walk you through the process, I'm sure you will be successful.

DC, jvs, thanks for the prompt replies and the info. Like I stated earlier I am just staarting to collect a few items to give this thing a whirl. My Grandfather made the best blackberry wine and something he called a cordigle(sp) made with peaches, worked it and changed crocks at least three times. Had a wonderful taste but as a teenager after a small glass I couldn't ride my bike. Thanks again guys.....................lb
