i recently traded a 94 lincoln mark vIII with MAJOR problems for a series 70 colt combat commander 45acp with the satin nickel finish. its a sweet gun. its the first 1911 style pistol i have owned and the first 45acp for that matter. i absolutely love this gun....it doesnt kick at all but it sure is loud....so far it hasnt jammed at all (about 200 rounds thru it since i owned it). i was just wondering if anybody likes these guns and why.
i was also wondering if anybody has had problems with them and what they were thanks guys.

1911's  or colts in general??? I love the 1911 I have three of them, but none are colts..When I sarted going to matches nobody was shooting the colt pistols( well very few) I bought Kimbers and a Para-ord. They have a great feel. I also have a glock and an XD but when it comes to shooting IPSC the 1911's always go with me- Kevin

Those are good guns, and were very highly regarded when they were in production. You'll get a lot of feedback about brands other than Colt because Colt has practically gone out of business and other companies are making excellent 1911s today.  I think you can still buy new Colts, but it seems to be a nostalgia market.

I had two new 1911a1 colts from the 70's and 80's that had problems. This was a time when colt had problems with their quality. I had a new 357mag python that had a timing problem which they are known to have too. I don't own anymore colt products. If you got a good used one your ok its just the new ones i had problems with. I'm willing to bet i could buy 1 gun out of 1 million manufactured and if there was a problem with 1 gun i would get that 1 thats my luck.  If i get something thats good right out of the box i find that companies quality to be exceptional.  At that time money was tight when i purchased the colts and after i was gun shy on purchasing new guns for a longtime.

My used chinese norinco 1911a1 and my new auto-ordnance army ww2 copy are awesome they are the two best 1911's i have ever owned so far. I think the auto-ordnance army ww2 copy is one of the best buys out there right now for a no frills 45acp/shooter for $389.  You don't need to spend $600 to $2,000 to get a quality 1911a1 when just $389 will do it.

as of yet i have had no problems with my colt. i guess the guy that had it before me had only shot it once. he said first time he shot it he had one hand on the handle and the other on top of the beaver tail....i bet you know where this is going....anyway i guess the slide came back and split the webbing of his hand and he never shot it again....so my pistol is near mint

Like with the Single Action Army cowboy gun, Colt is the name that's primarily associated  with the 1911. There were several other manufacturers during wartime; and, since then, there's been a heap of folks making either custom bits & parts or clones of the 1911.  Truth be told, some of the clones are better than the Colts.  A lot of folks got ticked off at Colt because they were getting so darned expensive (for a not-that-great gun) and the company's politics (they started cooperating with the government on "smart guns").  Overall, they seemed to abandon the civilian market ... to the point where they now have only a limited selection of guns.  But the 1911 lives on; and if your Colt is a good example (and there's no real reason why it shouldn't be), you can be happy you've got the "real deal".

I bought a Colt Series 70 Combat Commander in brushed nickel brand new about 1979....and with it a Government model series 70 in brushed nickel.
bought them both at the same time.
I was just learning about 1911's back then, and these pistols taught me a lot.
They both ran well, the all steel commander I had taken to the tool room where I woeked and had a good polish job done by a fellow shooter, and it fed ammo without a hitch. I was hard on both these colts, kept them clean and lubed, but was pretty hard on them, and they never let me down. I kept them stock, I don't get "hammer bite"...never had that problem with stock grip safeties, the only thing I changed were springs, and I also got rid of the bushings eventually and got some solid ones without those fingers on them.  These are good 1911's that you can do what you want with, and if you do have a problem, it can be fixed.

Now about that brushed nickel finish....I'm telling you after I used them, carried them, handled them, bumbed them, scuffed them up, these brushed nickel pistols looked like crap. LOL!!!!!
I never saw anything so ugly after they got full of dings and nicks and scratches...and when you scratch brushed nickel, guess what, it's shiny in those spots. The brushed nickel looked great in the store, but I use my 1911's a lot, and I'm hard on them.
Other than me not really liking brushed nickel myself, the guns were great, and still are.
I can get them refinished if I want someday, I kind of gave them a good cleaning and put them away a long time ago, I'll decide what to do with them someday. right now I'm wearing off the finish on a SA Mil-Spec.

I love 1911 pistols, and Colts are military spec and are great pistols.

Your going to like your all steel Commander, and you can fix any qurks it has, if any, without dumping too much money into it.
Or, if you want to add bells and whistles, the all steel Commander is a perfect pistol to do this with.

Great purchase you made there.

Colts are good solid guns, I have 3 of them. They just haven't been updated much in the last 20 years. A gun like Kimber has alot of standard stuff on it that would cost extra on a standard Colt.

I haven't tried this, but I have been told that you can bead blast (on low pressure) the satin nickle finish and return it to a nice even finish.  As you said, where it scratches, it gets shiney, so it seems like it should work.  I have 3 Colt 1911's and I have had many different ones over the years and these Colt's are the finest 1911's I have owned.  I enjoy all of them and shoot them a lot.

It don't get much better than this.  44 Man
