Love my 742
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:45:13 AM »
Two shots, two bucks in California Zone A this season! Both neck shots that severed the spinal column. Using a 742Carbine in .30-06 and handloads. 46.5 grains IMR 4895, Federal 210 primers, FC cases, Remington 165gr PSP Core-Lokt bullets at 3.28" COL. Don't know the muzzle velocity, but the gun cycles flawlessly. I never load more than three in the magazine although it holds four. The 18.5-inch barrel is no drawback in my experience. I never shoot at more than 200 yards.

Please tell us something about your 742. Does it work like the 7400's and 750's. ie does it work on the blast back principle or does it have a gas cylinder and piston?? Does it jam much?

Thanks

McLernon

McLernon,

Thank you for your interest. I do not know how to describe the gas action so I will remove the fore-end stock and photograph the forend section of the barrel and post the picture here in a few days. My best guess is that it is the same as the 7400, but just a guess. It does have twin action bars for sure. Regarding jamming, as long as I load three or less in the magazine, no jams period. With four in the magazine, there will be an occassional failure to feed the top round completely into battery, but never a problem with 3 or less. Preparation of the magazines is critically important to avoid interference with movement of the bolt. If the lips of the magazine show any gouging or scratching as a result of being rubbed by the bolt, they must be filed down and polished smooth. I do not know anything about the 750's gas action.
