I prefer the H&R base to the Weaver, simply because there are more options for where to put the scope. (More slots) But if you have a Dremel, its VERY easy to cut new slots in the Weaver base!! The Dremel comes with a 1/8" burr cutter and it works fast and perfectly for cutting extra slots in the base.
As for the rings, I have found I an use med rings. I prefer Leupold PRW rings, Weaver 4X4's also work well.
I also choose the Leupold scopes and the 2X7 is my all time favorite. Its on most of my Handis. Here is a shot of my 500 S&W.
Yes I use the Hammer spur. I haven't had to Acra glass the base on any handi, but yes I have in the past. I am usually able to get a good fit with some sand paper wrapped around the barrel.
Generally the big kickers in my contenders. I had a 357Herrett tha completely sheared the screws!!! I re-tapped to #8's and epoxied the base the the barrel, NO MORE PROBLEMS!!!
