Best way to clean smoothbore slug barrel?
« on: September 24, 2005, 06:05:39 PM »
I'm new to shotgun slug hunting.  I'm picking up my smoothbore 870 and a bunch of different types of rifled slugs this weekend.  I've heard that slugs can leave a lot of lead fouling.  How do you recommend I clean the barrel, and how often?  Is a 3-piece rod OK, or should I really get a 1-piece rod?  I also saw Cabelas selling these 1-piece rods that coiled up...I guess they're some type of cable.  I've also seen those Bore Snakes, but they don't look like they have enough bristles to really do a great job.  Plus, I don't like the idea of pulling that out through the ejection port.

I have an old Hoppes cleaning kit with a 3-piece aluminum rod and some plastic tips for patches, but I want to get the right tools for the job.  What are the basics I need?  What do you recommend for rod, brushes, bore mops,  solvent, lube?  Thanks!

i used a brass brush attachment for the rod. dip the brush in hoppes or whatever cleaner you use and then scrub. the best thing might be to take it to the range with you so you can clean every 5 shots or so, so you dont have a huge buildup to deal with at the end of the day.

Ditto what Critter said, plus those Lead-Away cloths remove any and all traces of lead in the bore.

Good Question!!!!

I use a length of old 3-piece rod and chuck it up in my power drill after screwing a bronze brush on the tip.  Dip it in our favorite powder solvents and start up the drill and work your way back and forth from breech to muzzle..  In no time at all you'll start spitting out lead.....a LOT of LEAD!!!!

Seriously, it's the only way to rid that dang barrel leading and polish the bore.

I like to clean my barrels whenever I am done shooting for the day, no point in letting the crud build up.

I like the Tipton one piece carbon rods, no pickup to redeposit on the barrel but the 3 piece aluminum rods will work fine. I skip the plastic tips and use a brass brush to push the patches through. Much more effective and helps speed the cleaning process up since there is far more of the patch in contact with barrel rather than empty space. Just watch when you get to the end, that darn tab on the breech side of the barrel can snag your finger as the brush clears the choke and it smarts! I've been wanting to try the drill technique, almost makes cleaning sound like it would be as much fun as shooting.

I use an 870 with a smoothbore barrel and Slugger rifled slugs.  The combination works great as long as I don't clean the bore!  For whatever reason, that barrel (in my gun, anyway), likes a thin layer of lead.  Haven't had any rust, either; I'm guessing that the lead coating prevents it.  Now, when I've shot Brenneke slugs through it, the pattern gets bigger and bigger as more Brennekes go down the pipe; I can actually see the lead build up.  I guess that the Remington Sluggers are a harder lead, and don't deposit as much in the barrel.

I use a bronze brush and Kroil to clean my 870 barrel. The Kroil seems to cause the lead and fouling to come out easily.

Greasing your slugs before you shoot them cuts down on leading.
I do it all the time.
Don't do this in an auto loader.
