I bought a Virgin Valley Encore SS barrel (about 22 inches) in 500 S&W a couple years ago.  First thing I did was make up some Hornady 350 grain XTP loads.  Went to the range and ... ouch!!!!!!!!!  That thing is the worst kicking rifle I own -- and I own some big one's too (50 BMG, 300 Ultra, etc.).

So, I sent it back and had a VV muzzlebrake installed.  Still kicks like a mother.  Mind you, I have no problem with heavy loaded (unbraked) 45-70 Encores.  This thing is way beyond that amount of recoil, even with the muzzlebrake.

I shot a deer with the 350 grain Hornady XTP load.  The deer only took one step -- however, the bullet fragmented upon impact and didn't really penetrate beyond about 4 inches.  I think the bullet is made for pistol velocities.  Now, I'm in the process of switching to a Barnes bullet, but haven't had time to get any loads worked up yet.

If anybody wants a slightly used VV 500 S&W Encore barrel, just ask.  I'd opt for a 460 S&W caliber.  That way you could download it to 454 Casul if need be.
