ruger vaquero .45 LC
« on: September 29, 2006, 05:39:45 AM »
i have a ruger vaquero in .45 long colt.
i really like the gun, and i reload for it.  i think it would be more accurate if i had an ajustable rear sight on it.
is it possible to have this done by a gunsmith?
i dont want to buy a new gun, like a blackhawk, just because it has an ajustable rear sight.
due to upcoming shoulder surgery, i may have to use this handgun for deer hunting this season as i dont think i will be able to steady a shotgun with my right arm. (i shoot left handed). bow hunting is definately out for this year. :'(
anyway,i`m thinking a gunsmith could cut in a dovetail that would allow a good ajustable rear sight (stainless) on my vaquero.  maybe even an ajustable peep hole sight on it?
to be honest, i am not very accurate with the fixed sights as it is.
any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
i dont want a scope on it.  just better iron sights.

if you dont have fun...then whats the point?

My guess is you'll have the front sight replaced also.

It might be easier, quicker, and possibly even cheaper to simply get a used Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt, then put on a "One Ragged Hole" rear sight blade.  A quick web search should hook you up with a One Ragged Hole rear sight.  One of my shooting buddies has used them, and likes them with a bead front sight (also easy to install on a Blackhawk).  He's able to ring 100 and 200 yard gongs pretty well with his revolvers.

If you wanted to save the money completely, you might be able to find a cowboy action shooter that would trade you a decent Blackhawk for an old model Vaquero in good condition.  I'd ask around on sassnet.com for that.

I have seen really nice drift adjustable rear sights affixed to "fixed sight" revolvers using dovetails.  It's a custom touch and can be very tastefully executed.  The front sight will be too low and would also have to be replaced.  The sight would offer you windage adjustment only, and you would still have to find a load you like and regulate the sights for it.  I don't believe this is what you are looking for.  I believe you can find a load you and your gun like that would be adequate for deer, and do what little filing you need to do to center the sight on your point of impact.  The fixed sights should serve you well.

Scroll down to the Stainless Ruger Vaquero .44 Magnum to check out the adjustable sight conversion that they do.

David Clements did mine. I believe he gets $200 or so including the front sight.

I remember reading about a company that makes rear peep sights for handguns of all kinds. If I was going to go to the expense of having an adjustable rear sight installed I would go with the peep sight - at my age it would extend my iron sight shooting out to a hundred yards or so. I haven't been able to do that for a lot of years.
