Not being a Rossi owner, the only issue is Rossi still doesn't offer an accessory barrel program even tho they've been working on it. If they did, I might be temped to try one of em in a caliber I don't own....like 44mag!

Boy...here's an old debate :D

I don't own any of them....but..several folks here own both...so perhaps they can give you a comparison..We also have a Rossi forum as well...incase you didn't know..http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/board,154.0.html

The lack of a barrel program has really hurt Rossi. I know many that would buy one if they would just get it together. It's been a long time sence there was any new info about it. I even called their CS looking for something to run off of to help out the Rossi forum a bit. The CS lady was very curteous and polite, but not informed very well on hardly anything I asked about. So I didn't get far with that.
I believe Rossis have their place. The quality of recent production surprised me, as actually pretty good...considering the price of the rifles of course. Many do not like them because they aren't made in the USA, and some people are very die hard to the cause. I believe that's one reason many buy NEF/H&R's over them, because Handis are US made. Plus Green Mountain barrels are pretty good quality overall.
I do like their Combo packages, and I believe thats one of the main reasons they stay around...that and Taurus backing ::). Their low profile hammer is a plus and their Slug barrels offering a ported barrel, open sights, and drilled and tapped barrel is nice too.

Still I love my Handis ::) :-X 8)

I own; 1 H&R (combo 30-30 &  20ga), 1 Nef 22Hornet 1 Nef 45-70 and one Rossi 357SS.
Not a really wide expertise.

The Rossi is a little Nef, little in size and price, but not too little in quality and quite equal for enjoyability.
They choosed cheapest solutions than Nef, while offering a functioning rifle.
My stock isn't polymer but wood covered with a special paint.
Maybe the caliber fit perfectly with the rifle ?.

I made some strange things from my Nef at the opposite I kept the Rossi at the simplest level.

For me, "Barrel program" is out of concern, for you it maybe different. Nef is OK, Rossi not.

You may try both and be satisfied or not, can't predict your particular experience with particular rifle.

That's my feeling, I won't enter debate "few more dollars and get a TC, and few more for a #1 ..."

I took a long hard look at both when i went to buy my first single shot , and for me the choice was made by stock design , the rossi had alot more drop than i liked and the forarm did not feel well in my hands .

The fact that i could get other barrels for the H&R was also a big selling point . I still feel that i made the right choice .

I own NEF Pardner 12 gauge, 20 gauge shotguns, and a NEF Handi in 223 Stainless, and I own a Rossi R357S 357 mag stainless.  I luv 'um all.  I wish Rossi still made them in pistol caliber and in stainless.  The frame on my Rossi is a .410 shotgun frame so compact and perfect balance for the 357 magnum chambering at 4 lbs. but very little recoil so a great plinker and truck gun.  I also like the fact that the frame is also stainless (not nickel plate like the NEF) so makes for a decent boat gun too.  I does have a tad annoying hammer block safety lever (and tranfer bar like the NEF)  but actually may be a plus for youth shooters.  I've popped a few wild goats with my Rossi using 158 grain 357 mag loads dropping them like flys my longest shot being 150 yards with open sights, so very accurate in proper hands.  I recommend both.

PS Rossi came with crapola factory rear sight but easy fix using $5 ebay TC Contender rear sight, direct bolt on.  ;)

I have had both, the fit and finish on the H&R is a little better, they both suffer from the problems a break open rifle has by design, like lockup and vertical stringing.  Buy the one that suits you now.  Larry

The only Rossi I have ever owned and still do is my 50 cal.  muzzleloader.  It came with a 243 barrel also.  I sold the 243 barrel on E-Bay.  I have no complaints about the Rossi and feel they are comparable to my NEF's  in quality.
