How big a rider can a Kawasaki 250 bayou handle.
« on: September 20, 2006, 05:44:12 PM »
I found a great deal on a Bayou. The problem is the machine has a sticker on it that says max load is 285 pounds. I am tall and weigh about 305lbs. I know most things are rated for less than what they can handle but I don't know how much that difference might be. I don't plan on doing any trail racing, snow plowing, or smashing my way through miles of wilderness. I just want something to get me around on my property and drag out a few deer now and again. I know I should probably get a machine that is at least 500cc but it is hard to justify spending 5,000 to 8,000 dollars on somthing I am going to use for 8 weekends a year. So, are there any big guys out there that have had experience wiith the Bayou 250. It's a 2005 model.

Can't speak to that particular machine but the Honda Recon 250 I had carried me at 260+ and pulled my trailer with over 1000 pounds in it as well. At times I carried bags of concrete mix on both front and back and added way more than my own weight on it at those times and it did fine. I'm sure it will do what you want.

peak,  I have seen some pretty big boys on quads in the 200 to 250cc range.  If you are just putting around and hauling out a deer or two, then go for it.  Personally I would prefer something with a bigger motor, but the Bayou 250 has been around a long time and will handle your chores.    If you get to climbing tall steep hills and extreme stuff, then you will notice the lack of HP.

If it's a good deal...I'd buy it...As you say, most are rated, but can handle more...I have some experience with Recons as well...I'm 6ft 5 and 240 something...and have hauled my butt and a 100 pound doe on the front rack out with no problem...I now have a Rancher... :) And have hauled me and 2 does out...one on the front and one on the back...It was a good day!!!

Thank you all for your advice. I got back to the guy and it had been sold. I thought that might happen but I wanted to think about it and get some other opinions before I made the purchase. Being careful costs my a good deal now and again but it has saved me a lot more than it has cost me.
