Hello gents,
Don't know if this is common knowledge around here, but I just discovered something that works like a charm for me. I have a Sidekick with the Weaver-style base that came with the gun, and while playing the game of "musical scopes" that I do for each new H&R gun in an effort to keep the scope as low as possible without running into interference from the hammer, I found myself looking at the Burris Scout Scope on my shelf. It's been sitting around ever since I found that I had no use for the "scout rifle concept". In order to mount it on the H&R base I had to file a new cross-groove in the appropriate location, but once that was done everything fell into place beautifully. The Burris had such wide latitiude in terms of eye relief that this mounting position works very well, even though it's quite a bit further back than on a true scout rifle. I've got it set up so that the rear of the eyepiece is just over one inch ahead of the tip of the hammer in the rest ( i.e. forward) position.
The Burris scout scope that I have is the fixed 1x version. Other models, or other brands, might require a little experimentation to find the right spot, but once it's in place it's great. I'm using low rings, which gives me a very comfortable cheekweld on the stock, but the hammer is very accessible, much more so than a standard, high-mounted scope with a hammer extender. It looks pretty good too.
This would be even better if someone could find an aftermarket scope base with more than just two grooves machined into it. No filing required!
Just thought I'd mention it. Sorry if it's old news.
John
