scout scope
« on: September 22, 2006, 05:56:43 PM »
Hello gents,

Don't know if this is common knowledge around here, but I just discovered something that works like a charm for me.  I have a Sidekick with the Weaver-style base that came with the gun, and while playing the game of "musical scopes" that I do for each new H&R gun in an effort to keep the scope as low as possible without running into interference from the hammer, I found myself looking at the Burris Scout Scope on my shelf.  It's been sitting around ever since I found that I had no use for the "scout rifle concept".  In order to mount it on the H&R base I had to file a new cross-groove in the appropriate location, but once that was done everything fell into place beautifully.  The Burris had such wide latitiude in terms of eye relief that this mounting position works very well, even though it's quite a bit further back than on a true scout rifle.  I've got it set up so that the rear of the eyepiece is just over one inch ahead of the tip of the hammer in the rest ( i.e. forward) position.

The Burris scout scope that I have is the fixed 1x version.  Other models, or other brands, might require a little experimentation to find the right spot, but once it's in place it's great.  I'm using low rings, which gives me a very comfortable cheekweld on the stock, but the hammer is very accessible, much more so than a standard, high-mounted scope with a hammer extender.  It looks pretty good too.

This would be even better if someone could find an aftermarket scope base with more than just two grooves machined into it.  No filing required!

Just thought I'd mention it.  Sorry if it's old news.

John

You can buy the standard scope rail or Ultra scope railfrom H&R/NEF. The standard has 5 cross slots, the Ultra has 6 cross slots and is about the same length as the Weaver #82. Check them out in the FAQ's in the Center Fire Forum. Scroll down, lots of good information.

First thing I did when I added a huntsman barrel some years ago was to add a Tasco 2x bantam scout scope. Low to the barrel, quick target acquisition, none of the hammer BS, and out of the way completely. Makes a nice light rig, that has taken a number of deer. Wonder how a Burris pistol scope would work?

 ;) ;) ;)

I removed the rear site and replaced it with a weaver base. No drilling or any machineing required!! Just screw/locktite it down and mount!!  Becaause its only one base, I chose a lite weight scope...a red dot!! Works GREAT!!

Sorry man, I do not remember the number. If I take it off, I'll have to re-sight it in.....

If you bring it to your local gun shop, talk to the owner. If he's anyone worth dealing with he'll allow you to check threw his selection. I do know it lines up perfectly with holes and diameter of the barrel.

Sorry I cannot get you the number. It IS a WEAVER base though...

Thanks, this is news to me.  The base that I'm using came with the gun and it has only two grooves.  I remember thinking at the time what a foolish design choice that was, when adding a few grooves in different places would mean such a big increase in versatility.

I'm going to get a couple of those "ultra" versions and try them out.

Thanks again.

The Ultra scope rail is about the same length as your Weaver #82, but it has a stand-off screw out on the end of the cantilevered part.

I couldn't get the 2005 retail parts price list to pop up, so all I have here ar the 2004 prices.

The Ultra Scope Mount without the hammer spur Part# is R00503 and is a little over $15.

The Ultra Scope Mount with the Hammer spur Part# is R03235 and is a little over $20.
