I won a nef .243 at a turkey banquet erlier this year and gave it to my boy as his first deer rifle. It has a nice laminate stock with the national wild turkey federation logo on it. We just got around to shooting it this weekend and I have to say I was very impressed that such an inexpensive gun can shoot so well. We shot 100gr. winchesters and only managed 1.75" @100 yards. When we switched to 80gr. federals the first group was .75" @100 yards. I consider any rifle that shoots .75" out of the box to be a fine rifle no matter what the cost. My boy is very proud of his new rifle. :)

 jlbeeibe Hello and welcome to the site, I consider 243 a fine Caliber to start  a young
 child out 0n. You might want a youth butt stock for hunting until he a little size.

Try the 95 gr. federal fusions.  I know mine loved them and others on here have said the same thing.

Welcome to GBO and congrats on the new rifle!! The 100gr Federal Power Shok as well as the 95gr Fusion ammo shoot under an inch in my .243 Ultra, both are inexpensive and great deer ammo! ;)
