Idaho Bear hunt
« on: September 20, 2006, 01:12:26 AM »
My son and I returned, last week, from our Idaho bear hunt.  It was quite the adventure.  The weather was against us.  It was over 90 degrees, a full moon, and smoke from the wildfires, filled the valleys.  There were 13 hunters, in two camps, and only 6 got bears.  My son and I got 2 of the 6 ;D.  My son used a H&R Ultra .30-06, with Federal prem. 180 gr. nosler partitions.  1 shot at 200 yds., off the sticks.  We couldn't retrieve the bear until the next morning, but it was a 1 shot kill thru the shoulders.  This was the longest shot of his life.  I was very proud!  My bear was taken at 40 feet, with my Marlin .45-70 guide gun.  I hit her 3 times in about 5 seconds, and she went only 8 feet.  The 2 bears were sows, about 5 footers.  Not the biggest bears on the planet, but the only ones we saw in 4 hard days of hunting.  They almost look like twins, and are a cinnamon/chocolate color.  I have 2-3 nice pics, if I could email them to someone to post for me, cause I'm old and somewhat computer challenged.

CONGRATULATIONS on your bears!!!

There must be a story behind yours....three shots in five seconds w a 45-70....that lever action is a smokin'!!! What loads did you use?

CW,  I used the new leverevolution ammo.  I had used the win. nosler part. gold ammo for three yrs.  But it got hard to find , and expesive[$42/box].  I tried the LE, and it was amazingly accurate.  Can't comment on bullet performance, cause they all went through her.  But I can say they left a fist size hole exit wound.  I might add that my feet were killing me and I sure didn't want to chase her.  The guide gun has done me good duty, and I wouldn't hesitate to use her on anything I could AFFORD TO HUNT, OUT TO 225 YDS.

congratulations on the successful hunting, and the successful rearing of 'a young buck'.    i understand how you could be proud of him.

i'm very happy for your success,

ss'

ps:

i'm almost to the point of being hungry looking at that Marlin you've got!
