Pre 1893 Turkish Mauser
« on: September 21, 2006, 07:13:20 AM »
I went to Centerfire Systems yesterday and purchased a pre 1893 Turkish Mauser.  Here is a pic, not a good pic at all but it's the best I can do.

I shot a 3 shot group from 65 yards and missed hitting the target all 3 shots.  I moved closer and discovered the rifle was shooting high so I moved the target back to 65 yards and put another dot on the target but lower than the original one.

You can see where I hit the target with 3 rounds.  The ammo was the Yugoslavian 1970's production mil-surplus.  Not a bad group, just way too high.  The rifle worked flawless and smooth.

Now, what do I have to do to bring the point of impact down this much?  Would a lighter grain bullet do it or am I going to have to get a taller front sight if there is such a thing?  Thanks

You can get a taller front sight that will solve your shooting high problem.I did this with my Czech 98/22 and it worked great.Try Tennessee Gun Parts for higher sight blades.

The barrel must be bent!... you should just sell the Turk to me, as I've been looking for one.  Really...., good shooting!  You can raise the front sight or lower the rear sight.   If the rear sight is bottomed out, Stan is right,  You will have to get a taller front.   I soldered a piece of copper wire to the top of my Swede sight but it could get knocked off and a replacement taller sight would be better.

I contemplated altering my front sight but after looking at my other Mauser's the front sight blade appears to be the same.

So I will keep the original sight blade and just order me a taller front sight.  The rifle is shooting exactly 11 1/2 inches high at 65 yards.

Is there a guide to go by for ordering the correct height sight or is this just going to be a trial and error thing replacing the front sight until I find the one that puts me dead on or close to it at 100 yards?

I called Tennessee Gun Parts and the person I talked with said the front sights were being cut right now and they would be ready within two weeks.  They will have 3 different heights to choose from and he said they would be identical to the original ones.
