Whitworth rifle advice please
« on: September 26, 2006, 05:07:28 PM »
I am being offered an Interarms Whitworth in 458 Win Mag as partial payment for another rifle.  I want to have it reamed to 458 Lott.  It is an 8# rifle and is brutal as is this light.
Have any of you hunted with one?  Any comment or opinions on accuracy, what it's worth, reliability etc?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.  Oh, and yes I have shot the Lott a bunch.  One of the first things I will do is put a mercury comp. in the butt and a new recoil pad. Having had a Lott in a Ruger #1, these mods. make the whole experience much more manageable with out putting on a compensator...which is not practicle without hear protection.

Thanks,
Dana

Best check the length of the magazine before you punch it out to the Lott length. The Lott needs a 3.600 loa which is .3" longer than the Win round.

DC,

Depending on condition, and caliber, they seem to be in the $650-800 dollar range.  The .375's seem to in much higher demand than the .458's.

As to reaming it out to the Lott, sure, but if you look at one chambered in .375 H&H, you will see how much metal has to be removed to get a full length cartridge in there.  It would be to your advantage if this rifle was a .375 for that reason, but it can certainly be opened up, and I have never heard of a .375 Whitworth coming apart.

When you put the mercury comp in, take the time to reinforce the stock.  A couple of crossbolts, a wrist pin, and a proper glass job will go a long way to keep your stock from cracking.
