Im considering getting another "Needed" barrel for my Encore. Has anyone had any experience with the 338? If so what would be the shortest barrel lenght  you suggest? Ive had a 338 before and they are a stout cartridge. How about a muzzel brake ? This rifle will be used (hopefully) for this years Moose hunt.

Thanks for the reply, but im curious about the brake. Ive never been around one let alone shot a firearm with one, i just thought that the recoil and the report would be less? Not so? I had a 10" 7mm08 and that was unbearable. What is the advantage of a brake besides less recoil? Im guessing that the report is louder. I shot my winchester model 70 in  338 loaded right up tight and the report was ok. Wish i had never sold it ! Isnt that always the way..

I agree 100%. I'm just shooting contenders right now and not any of the high power encore rounds, but even in my 7x30, the factory muzzle break is EXTREMELY noisy. I only shot it without hearing protection once and that was with the pistol grip on it. I really thought that my ears were bleeding. That is one of those mistakes that you only make once. I'm considering cutting the break off and recrowning it or trading it for a barrel without a break.
