I need some 38-55 target model help
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:12:59 AM »
I just bought a 38-55 Target model used.  Where do I start as far as buying bullets for it?  What is the best bullet diameter to start with?  Can I use 375 Winie brass or 30-30 brass opened with the bullet seated out a little further to compensate for the .109 shorter brass?  Is there something besides cerrosafe to make a chamber casting with? Can I mash a soft 38 wadcutter a little to slug the bore with?  I am aware of several lead bullets for this round but does any one make a jacketed softpoint for this caliber?  Thanks for all your help guys

Well, I will admit I don't know much at all about the 38-55, other than some that have bought them have had some troubles with the oversized chambers, I believe.
This isn't a whole lot but may be of some benifit.. and if nothing else a Bump

Eskimo,

Suggest you do a search on NEF/H&R Centerfire Rifles for 38-55.  There are some unique (but not unsolvable) issues with the Target Model.  I bought a new Target Model early this year and find it a pleasant and enjoyable rifle and round to shoot.  I don't know about any purchased bullets since I have cast all of mine using the one and only 38-55 bullet mold that Lee makes.  The Lee mold makes a good bullet at a nominal weight of 250 grains.

The new rifle had a tight chamber, such that the brass would stick in the chamber after firing a round.  Some people polish the chamber, but I have chosen to let mine 'wear' in.  At first virtually every round would stick and I'd have to tap it out with a 3/8 dowel rod.  After about 100 rounds I only had a couple stick, so it seems to be resolving itself.

The search feature is disabled until next week when Matt said he'll try to get it fixed. In the mean time, the next best way to find posts is by using the search users in the member's list. The thread below has links to JPH45's and Cheatermk3's posts, look thru them and find their .38-55 info.

Hi, I have two target models, one a H&R and the other a Wesson and Harrington.  Accuracy at best was mediocre, until I talked to a factory rep at H&R and found out the barrels are supposed to be .379.  I changed to Laser Cast 260 gr gas checked at .380 diameter and groups shrunk down to 1" at 100 yards.  The H&R chambers tight with the .380 bullets, but the Wesson and Harrington is fine.  I regularly shoot steel targets at 100, 200 and 300 yards.  One you get your target model shooting right, you will want to shoot it all the time!
