Cast Iron Dutch Oven Recipes...........
« on: May 03, 2003, 01:03:13 PM »
I'm looking for Cast Iron Dutch Oven recipes, if you have any that you'd be willing to share, I'd really appreciate it!!

Recently while helping my dad clean out his basement (because he's retired and going to move closer to a golf course) we uncoved a new Cast Iron Dutch Oven that he bought in the 70's.  He can't ever remember using it, and said I could take it, provided I use it to make a meal now and then when we go on our annual Moose / Caribou hunting trip!

I don't care if you can barely boil water or are a full blown chef, I'd like to hear about what has worked for you!!  Thanks, Del
I LOVE TO HUNT!
Especially with a Handgun!!

Best I can do is some Dutch oven round steak and a chicken soup. and a quick cobbler.....
Take a round steak don't trim it up just cut it into bite size pieces and dredge in flour brown it in the dutch oven then add one can of cream of mushroom soup seasoned to taste and one can full of water add one can of store brand mushroom stems and pieces  and some dried onions. cover and allow to cook down.
at this time put a tube of grands biscuits in a second preheated oven cover and add coals to the top. let this bake for about 13 minutes both pots should be done by this time serve the steak over the biscuits and you have a quick camp meal, a bonus is to make home made drop biscuits with this.

Second cut up dredge and brown some chicken breasts in bite size pieces, add Cream of mushroom soup, some peas and carrots, onion
red bell peppers and a can of water, allow to come to boil, then drop biscuits either tube or home made drop type in the soup and you have chicken and dumplings.

Cobbler
Take two cans of your favorite pie fillings mix and match to your taste
sprinkle a yellow cake mix over the top add one stick of butter cut into 1/4" pats over the top of the cake mix, cover and top the oven with coals allow to cook, you can check it occasionally when the cake and butter have formed a crust pull it off the fire and take the cover off the DO and you have a desert fit for a king or at least a cowboy or at the very least a bunch of boy scouts.

Also if you like the cherry filling with chocolate cake try apple with a spice cake or peach with spice cake you can also try adding a little bit of 7 up or sprite to it. makes the crust a bit lighter.

Ice Cream in a can.

What You Need

2 clean metal cans, both with lids (make one can larger than the second)
Use the ice cream recipe already given in Ice Cream in a Bag or:
1 cup of very cold milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbs. chocolate syrup
Ice
Salt

How To Make It

Place the ice cream mixture in the smaller coffee can (make sure it is a good clean can). And seal the can with the lid on tightly.
Now place that smaller can in the larger coffee can. Place the ice and also the salt around the smaller can making sure the smaller can is more or less in the center of the larger can.
Seal the larger can with it's lid tightly and roll the can around for about a half hour. This process works great if you have kids. Let them sit on the floor and roll the can between them. And then when it's all done...you have a nice container to keep the ice cream in!

Ice Cream in a bag.

What You Need

1 tablespoon Sugar
1/2 cup Milk or half & half
1/4 teaspoon Vanilla
6 tablespoons Rock salt
1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
Ice cubes

How To Make It

Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully.
Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.
Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!

Smothered Pull Dou (coot) any duck, rabbit, big game ect.

As the Cajun joke goes: Q. what is the first thing you do after you kill a rhino?
A: you make a roux

equal parts of oil or butter with flour in bottom of pan on med heat, stir continuously, do not burn, untill you get a light brown, mahogony or dark set,  your choice, then add the trinty, onion, celery, carrots and brown, add stock or water then meat and smother top with ringed onions,  cook long and slow.
works with anything.
