Utah Travel Plans
« on: September 17, 2006, 04:09:37 AM »
We're going next week. I've been doing internet searches and have maps, but would appreciate any comments about specific sights that fall into the 'do not miss' category. We are from the mid-west but will be driving South from Salt Lake City to the southern Utah area. Bryce Canyon, Moab and Zion are on our list, but any and all comments based on your experiences would be just great.

Thanks for replying.

I would skip Salt Lake City and head straight for southern Utah--unless you like lots of traffic.

I enjoyed Zion more than Bryce, but they have had to with the temperatures. When you visit Bryce, you are down in the canyons, and the temperatures are higher. At Zion, you are up in the pines atop the mesas, and it is cooler.

At this time of year, go prepared for any sort of temperature, it can be 100, or it can be snowing (rare, but it does happen). Generally, it will be cool in the morning, and warm up quickly. Keep in mind the altitude if you are from sea level, and watch your water intake. It is the high desert.

We enjoyed Moab this summer.
All of Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, and the Four corners area will keep you busy and taking pictures for more time than you have to spend.
That is, if you like the S/W.

Utah is one of the two most underrated states of the Union. Arkansas is the other one. Beautiful state.

William's comment about photography jarred my memory.

First, if there is any way that you can manage it, get to Monument Valley. Take whatever you need to take lots of pictures.

Second, get a polarizing filter for your camera. It will do wonders for your photography. It will bring out shadings and subtle colors in the rocks that you just can't see otherwise.

Thanks for the replies. We're near Zion Nat'l Park right now. We plan to see that, then the North rim of the Grand Canyon, then Bryce Canyon. We may not make it to Eastern Utah this trip, maybe next year. We have been to Monument Valley a few years ago.

Thanks again.
