Model 70 in WSSM???
« on: August 28, 2006, 12:54:46 PM »
I bought a Win. Model 70 this weekend in .243 WSSM.

I took it to the range yesterday and it shot GREAT and worked fine...  I couldn't ask for a better off-the-shelf rifle.

Then I starting reading all types of trash talk on the web. The WSSM's won't feed, they burn out barrels in 200-300 rounds and even this "isn't there a recall on those"!!!

Did I get a fluke or are there problems with the WSSM's, and the .243 WSSM ??? in particular??

Do you reload? I hope so for that cartridge.

Yep - I reload.

I already have dies and a box of the 95 grain Barnes XLC bullets on the way!

Factory stuff IS expensive, but a friend found two more boxes of the 95 gr. BST's on clearance at his local Wally for $9.00 a box.

Now I have 4 boxes of ammo that will supply me with brass for a while...

That's pretty much the reason why I asked. I've seen a number of Winchester's on the shelves chambered for the WSSM cartridges, but the lack of factory ammo is not there. Plus, with the recent Winchester going under fiasco, it's hard to say what will happen to this cartridge. I wanted one, but went with a Winchester in 22-250 instead.

I feel better about the 300 WSM because Remington is also chambering for it.  Not sure about the survival of the other calibers.  Surely is a crowded field of new cartridges.

Soprtsmans Warehouse did have 3 bags of brass we got two of them. They have several bags of 243wssm. Just ordered everything we needed from Midway. Can't shoot it till they come in, bummer.

Hey to Steve!

I figured you had made that move final to Houston Co., so you still spend some of your time in Eads?

Can you still use that range near your house? It was one handy set-up.

I bought the model 70 in .243 WSSM as a antelope rig, I even had a new Stainless/Black Synthetic Browning A-bolt in 25.06 in my hands the same day! There was a $500.00 difference in the out-the-door price though, and as it turned out I think the A-bolt would have been hard pressed to shoot better with factory ammo than the .243 WSSM...

Bummer about the scope mounts - it's harder and harder to find things locally in Memphis.

Check this out. I saw something the day I bought the model 70, and went back and bought it the next payday. I bought a new-in-box T/C Blue/Synthetic .50 cal New Englander...! It had been sitting on the dealers shelf for 3+ years. I've got both a Huntsman and Sidekick inlines, but missed the feel of an old sidelock muzzleloader. I can't wait to smell the sulfer!

Sorry  I'm slow getting back, been up at the cabin. Stay up there a good bit. No I have not made the move yet still here but maybe next year. Still got the range here at Eads. Been shooting the 25 wssm some. Been working on loads. It is a nice rifle.I am so busy I don't get to shoot much just work on the cabin most of the time.  I just finished a new 40 cal. Flintlock longrifle for a prize at one of our muzzleloading shoots in October.

I have been trying different loads and have not found one that was any better than factory around 1 1/2, till this evening. I put 3 in one hole and 2 just out. Now I have losded up 10 more rounds and if it will do it tomorrow I will be a happy camper. I like this rifle. I don't see anything wrong with it or the 25wssm. I left my tri pod up at the cabin or I would check it out on the crono.

Whip,

I was planning on loading some of these .243 WSSM with 95 gr. Barnes XLC bullets this weekend, but my dad got sick and went in the hospital last Thursday up in Springfield, MO and I just got back today.

So what with bow season now open, a new T/C Muzzleloader to sight-in and the WSSM shooting so good with factory ammo, I will more than likely just shoot those for this season.

What bullet/powder yielded the positive results?

I hope your dad is doing OK.I am useing 46g Winchester 760 powder, hornandy 100sp,win. LRP. It did not shoot quite as good today but still right at an inch. I guess we will just go with that load for now.I want to play with it some more but I am going up and work on the cabin for a while. I will be gone till the middle of October. Steve
