how many hogdoggers do we have?

I don't own any dogs myself, but have been on a number of hog/dog hunts now and it is a very exciting way to go. I've always been impressed with the dogs, & their owners/handlers each time I've gone and would likely get into it more owning my own dogs if I had more access to locations to hunt them. Maybe when I retire and have more time to work with some dogs..

Dang, I didn't know there was any other way to hunt hogs. You're telling me some people hunt them without dogs??? Hardly seems ethical to me....anyone can just shoot a hog doing it with dogs is what gets the blood pumping. I am new to this site and it is a "big" site. Got just about everthing here. Got some pictures of dogs and hogs at

That's ok Trey. Being new to this site, and to hunting, I was just making a big entry. Nothing serious at all. I don't take to many things to seriously as we all have our ways and none are wrong, just different than others. I haven't got the patience or the grace to stalk quietly anymore. I am more like a bull in the china shop. Everything knows I am coming or have been there. This board has just about everything except dancing girls and I am not to sure I haven't just missed them with all the choices.

I find personal joy in having tea and crumpets AFTER I watch a pack of dogs catch a hog. Doing so BEFORE the catch is simply uncivilized.

Tea and crumpets sounds OK but I prefer Jim Beam and Redman whilst discussing how poorly everyone elses dogs looked, by comparison of course, during the days hunt.

What is considered a pack a dogs??? I use two and maybe a young green one if I have one. Seems the bad hogs are more willing to stand their ground with two as opposed to 6 or 7. That means less running for me. Usually means a lot less dogs cut up too. Two dogs tend to keep a cooler head and not get to stupid.

Welcome to the boards hicntry. I''ve only seen one airdale hog dog. Never did see him do much that day, but he did look good running around. I think it was mostly because he was fast, and I wasn't. LOL Yeah, some of us actually bow and pistol hunt them pigs too..It is a little barbaric, but whats a man to do?

I just use one dog. A minuture schnouser. Hogs don't run from him at all. They chase him back to me and then I shoot them. No walking at all. I call him a pack too. It makes him feel like the leader.

Dee that one made me laugh. I have had two or three dogs get into big bedding areas and pi$$ of a lot of hogs all at once. Now, when I see the dogs coming back to me I know I can expect about 20 to 30 hogs right behind them and I start looking for a high spot to park my butt. I don't climb as fast as I did about 30 to 40 years ago so it takes the right spot.

I know what you mean. Last year I was huntin with some guys that me and curdog both know in heavy brush. A boar killed their catch dog (a pit so know great loss as far as I'm concerned) but, a sow weighing about 350 came around behind me had decided she wanted to fight too. I just think she was tired of running. Anyway, this 56 year old man with a beat up body 4570ed her at about 30 feet head on. The two guys with me (the dog boys) thought it was a great shot. Actually it was the only shot. I am too old to run. Curdog knows my history and understands.

Seems to me we have the same trouble, Traded speed and agility for easy walking and soft sitting, No more fast dashes to a safe spot to land, And climbing is strictly out of the question. I ran lion and bear dogs for years and finally had to give it up.

Curdog, you bring us to a point I would like to make. For those of us without dogs, but who have enjoyed going along on hog/dog hunts, feel a bit naked when the dog owners will not allow us to carry a handgun. I completly understand their concern for their dogs when people they don't know well are handling sidearms. But, as several have posted, at times the hogs decide to fight rather than run, and they don't care if they fight a dog, or a human. Without the option of being armed, (and not as fast as I once was + clumsy running the woods too especially in the dark) it becomes something deemed not quite worth the risk. Does that make sense?

markc, about the only weapon we will not do is a bow, handguns and rifles are difficult when hunting with dogs but not impossiable, i carry a 45 lc for the bad boys or when you get into ones that like to charge, before we take anyone out we make it very plain,do not shoot my dogs! i also understand some guys thoughts about letting someone carry a weapon when hunting dogs.there is also alot of guys that take nothing but hobbles or pigging string. i have been in some real bad spots before and glad i had my pistol. our main business is with knives but have no problem with guns, there are alot of ways to hunt hogs and none are wrong, just different

curdog, I have always follwed the lead and the rules set out by the guys with the dogs. I figure that with their investment in their dogs, they should be able to make the rules. The last hog/dog hunt I was on, I carried my knife and a holstered revolver. The revolver was a "just in case" weapon. I've hunted with some guys who only carried some narrow nylon strapping and some string. Not sure they had a knife at all? I did though, just in case. LOL

curdog, believe me I have considered it. The time requirement right now really prohibits it. I am back in college after all these years and work full time, so I have no dogs right now. I took my wife on a hog dog hunt and she didn't seem too pleased with it. I've enjoyed it quite a bit though.

it does take time and money, it takes me about an hour everyday to feed and water, and that does not include working with pups or training,then count 175lbs feed a week and worming once a month and any meds, you have to be commeted, but i love it and it keeps me out if the house. lol
