handi stock switch-a-roo

I do  not like the survivor stock on my .223 Handi, as it is not very good for bench rest shooting. Its fine for prone shooting, but since it is rare that I shoot that way, I figured I would do a little stock swapping with my 45-70. I put the 45-70 stock on the .223, the .223 stock on my 12 gauge, and the 12 gauge stock on my 45-70. I had cut the 12 gauge stock into a straight grip, and reblued the shotgun. Well the blueing didnt last, it would rust if you even looked at it wrong. So I fixed it, along with the stock that went on the .223. Got some spray on bedliner from wally world and went to town. The .223 stock turned out looking just like synthetic,(as if that is a good thing) so it matched the tupperware fore end. That stuf is tough as nails also. A few things about it. One, it says to shake the can for 2 minutes. It doesnt mean 1, or 1.5 minutes, it means 2. If you dont, you will have this strange grey looking crap come out.(trust me ;) )
Two, make sure you clean whatever you are spraying real good with alcohol or similar stuff. Three, if you are spraying metal, make sure that you rough it up good. Ill be redoing the scatter gun at a later time.
OK, now the gun porn.

My favorite, which is in the process of getting a new butt plate. Ill post pics if it turns out ok, even though it will be  temporary fix for now. Gun season is drawing near you know.

Yeap the truck bed liner stuff does work on a cheap wooden stock. But I am not so sure I would use a spray can "bed liner" for my actual bed of my pickup. I have done a wooden forarm this way with good sucess, and it comes out very grippy and pretty durable. It surprised me how much it actually matched the synthetics.
I have also done a couple rifle barrels, and shotgun barrels with a Krylon spray, semi matte finish, and it comes out excellent!!! I have yet to have any I have done show signs of rust. And it sprays out smooth, just like a "Matte Finish" on many factory barrels. If you are an all weather kind of guy, I highly recomend it.

You are SOO RIGHT!! This stuff is crap for its intended use, but a godsend for gun stocks, handles or anything that gets gripped and handled. It holds up great for that purpose!! But wont last a week on a pickup bed!! Go figure, its kinda like Duct tape, sticks to everything accept ducts!!  LOL.

I have done countless stocks, grips and for ends for people for years. Everyone LOVES it!!

I have some Krylon Stove & BBQ Grill paint that looks really nice on metal.  That truck bed liner stuff looks nice.

How about Rustoleum John Deer Greene in a crackle finish?  It should work well on a hunting rifle. Tough, non-reflective, and really blends in.  ;D

Swampman,

I tried the Hi-Heat BBQ paint on my Buffalo Classic barrel and it looked great, but it lifted off after I removed the tape from the barrel. I "thought" I had degreased and otherwise correctly prepared the metal. Sprayed numerous coats on a hot sunny day on warm metal.

Have you had any "sticking" issues with paint? I have a 20ga youth Pardner I want to weather proof, but now I am leary of using the BBQ paint.

Any input?

Thanks,

Grizz
