.32 for Cowboy action
« on: October 02, 2006, 01:29:15 PM »
Just getting into cowboy action.  Found a pair of SS .32 Birdshead Rugers. They seem to be really neat six guns. Does anyone use these for ciwbiy shooting?  I reload so ammo would not be a problem.  I'm 67 and am not in it to be competitive, just to have fun.  Also thought these, if usable, would be good guns for my grandson to start with.  Your feelings-thoughts-opinions?

Thanks

Yes, they are OK for SASS matches. They are seen more and more these days. Go ahead and get 'em and get to shootin'. You would be able to shoot in the senior class at your age.

I'm seeing more and more of those little .32s in shooters' hands at matches.  One handed shooters find them to be very easy to operate.  The .32 H&R case has just enough room to slip a full cubic centimeter of black powder (or black powder substitute) under the bullet, making you legal for the black powder classes.  My wife has been thinking about getting a pair of them next year.

Sold a rifle I haven't used for years and bought the two .32's.  Both new in the box.  One of them is a Last Cowboy limited addition.  They certainly are beautiful and the actions and triggers are remarkably smooth.  Can't wait to get them to the range tomorrow.

If you want a lever action rifle in .32 H&R to match the pistols, Marlin makes one.  I've seen a few in action at matches, and they seemed to work pretty well.  It's really not too big of a deal to have a different caliber for your rifle, though (lots of folks mix and match with no difficulty).

My wife and I will have to wait until tax return time, early next year, to seek out any more cowboy guns.  We already traded lots of new fangled guns to get started, but it's been worth it.

Have fun at the range with those new shooters.
