P14 Enfield rebarrel ?

I have a Winchester made P14 Enfield, that has the chamber plugged for use as a drill/parade rifle >:( >:( >:(. This rifle was made in 1916 chamberd  for the 303 all the metal is correct matching #'s.
 I knew that it was plugged price was right though, almost free, it came with a correct #1mk3 Smle ;D ;D all for 120 bucks.
I was thinking about some sort of wildcat using the 303 case just to keep cost down and make some sort of working rifle out of it. Any thoughts on what to do?

They are easily rebarreled into any of the belted magnums.  My dad has one that was rebarreled to 7mm REm mag by Century arms.  The make really nice rifles,  they are big enough to use for several of the large magnums.

The P14 is quite capable of handling the large full length magnum rounds, 375H&H, 416 Rigby etc.. It would seem a waste to rebarrel to a 303 based wildcat.. The Winchester name makes the action a bit more desireable(dollar wise anyway) and little 'has' to be done to alter the rifle other than rebarrel and adjust feeding and mount scope bases.. There are several thiings that can be done such as straightening the bolt(or replacing it), straightening the bottom metal for a more streamlined look. One can also alter the bolt stop and reshape the rear of the action to appear a bit more mauser like..  Please be aware the increased collector awareness in military arms of late has drastically raised the prices these old rifle bring. I believe this trend will most likely continue. Perhaps rebarreling with a P14 barrel in 303 i.e. re-militarising the rifle would be financially wiser..?

I would like to keep it in "original" configuration, how dificult would it be to find a useable Winchester barrel ? By the way the #1mk3 smle shoots like a dream I was able to hit the 500m ram at our club with it. ;D ;D Well worth the money spent.

It will likely be hard to find the barrel you need but it can be done. Buy a GunList and check out the parts listed for sake. There are some that deal just with barrels, mostly shotgun, but rifles too. Call and ask..  You might also check the gun parts houses such as GunPartsCorp.  Also watch EBay and the other auction sights. Occasionally a barrel will come up for sale. The Winchesters can get pricey.. I really wasn't aware that winchester made any P14's. The original contract for the P14 was with Remington. They converted production to M1917(30-06 Cal) when it became obvious that SpringfieldArsenal would not be able to supply enough 1903 springfields. Winchester and the other producers got into the game later.. Are you certain the rifle is a P14 in 303?

I saw an interesting P14 last night - it had been customized and rebarrelled to a 220-303 (never heard of that caliber before - heard of a 25-303 but not the 220-303).  Nice P14 action and stock, though. 

Same fella had a custom 98 Mauser sporter in 6.5-06 with a half octogonal/half round barrel.  Nice lookin' pice of custom work.  Mikey.

   If this comes out this picture shows what can be done to the P-14 and P-17 Endfield.    I think these actions are probably the most over looked actions going.    This may be due to the work required to clean them up and make them look nice or the cock on closing of the bolt.    What ever the case is either "problehttp://www.customguns.us/images/gun13.jpm" can be taken care of with a bit of work.    When cleaned up the action ends up reminisant of the 720 Remington wich in reality is the ultimate refinement of the P-17, P-14 action.     These large actions will swallow cartridges as large as the .505 Gibbs, this is over doing things a bit and I would limit them to the .416 Rigby class and this includes the big Weatherby offerings.    If you want to see more pictures go to customguns.us and click on custom rifles and then custom .366DGW build.

  The parts houses, SARCO, Tom Forest, might come up with an original barrel. These were just "dewated" by pluggin the chamber of the barrel (and burning the wood a bit. If you can find hard copy of Shotgun News, they have advertisers who deal in this sort of thing. shotgunnews.com... display ads are not on the web site (damn)
   You can have installed any P14/M17 barrel of your choice. This is a large action and .223 would be silly, but your bucks.
   Mr. Epps of Canada had a line of improved cartridges on the .303 case and rechambered the P14's in .303 to the .303 Canadian Magnum... .300 Savage preformance in the SMLEs and .308 preformance in the P14s using the .303 case. And using the .300 H&H Case, improved like Ackley and weatherby, and using the .303 bullets of the .303 British round... Hot, Hot, Hot... His sons still have the gun shop running. Elwood Epps.
