Does Anyone Know How to Tune a Remmy 7400 Magazine??
« on: September 29, 2006, 04:21:16 PM »
I believe I am having magazine problems. If I put one down the pipe and three in the mag I get a jam more often than not. If I limit the mag to two rounds no problem. I think that the drag force with three in the mag is just too much for the return spring to handle but the mag seems normal to me. With hunting season approaching I would like to work thru this problem and at least carry three in the mag. Remmy 7400 experts help!!!!!!!

Thanks

I don't realy have a fix for the problem but a new mag wouldn't be all that much and would give you a extra mag after you fix the old one thats what I would do any way  ;)

old06 has good advice. When you have feeding problems with a detachable magazine firearm replacing the magazine is the first thing to try. If it fixes the problem you know what the problem was. If not you may need the help of a gunsmith or need to send it in to the factory. If it does fix the problem you can compare how the ammo is held at the feed lips of both magazines and duplicate the good mag. I did just that with my magazines for my 7600.

I had three jams out of forty rounds fired today using my new mag. One was with one in the pipe and three in the mag, the rest were with two in the mag. I am using a cartridge OAL of 2.875 inches. Another source indicates the max OAL should be 2.810 inches. What OAL in .308 should I be using. I am guessing that the longer OAL doesn't help matters but I am curious what others are using in their 7400 and 750's.

Thanks

How long have you had the gun and how do you carry the magazine (clip as we call them up here)?
The reason I ask is where we hunt in Maine it’s pretty much “Remington Country” and most of them are auto-loading:
Dad shoots a 742 in .30-06
Both of my brothers shoot 7400 synthetics in .30-06.
My cousin uses a 740 in .30-06.
My other cousin’s husband uses a 740 in .280.
Our friend Randy uses a 7400 in .30-06
One of his son’s uses a 7400 Carbine in .30-06
Our friend Dick uses either: BAR in 300 mag., or 7400 in .280, or 740 in .30-06
Another friend Joe uses a BAR in .270

Whenever these guys have had jamming issues (not very often, mind you) they would boil the clips in water; you will not believe the gunk that comes out of there, pine needles, dirt, pocket lint, etc. Then it’s into the oven on low heat until they are dry (sounds like a recipe huh?) That’s it. Don’t oil it or you’ll be boiling the junk out of it much sooner.

I remember being a little shaver at deer camp when my dad had a problem with his 742 jamming; this is exactly what they did. Then a friend of ours took the clip from the oven once it cooled, loaded it with shells, stepped over to the door, pointed the muzzle out and up with the stock on his hip and squeezed off all the rounds in the gun so fast it was like one drawn-out shot.

“Don’t jam now” he said when he handed it back to Dad… ;)

Some of those guys boil their clips every other year just as a precaution…that's about the limit of our "tuning"...

I have had the gun for about a month and the new clip I just got. You got me thinking though. The jams occurred after firing 30 rounds and cleaning the bore  after 20 without really cleaning the chamber that well.  Maybe I just needed to clean the chamber better. The new clip has some fairly sharp edges that bear on the cartridges and that can't help either.  Should I round these corners with a fine file or stone them down a bit??

Thanks for the responses

I think u should try put bullets fully against on the back of inside mag.. And try full loaded 5 ammos.. If still jams, Try adjust the bullet abit away from back of inside mag.. Know what im talking about??
