Holster for Super Blackhawk Hunter
« on: August 09, 2006, 10:24:33 AM »
How do you like to carry your SBHH?  I carry my SBHH strongside in a Galco leather hoster.  However, this gun is so heavy that I am constantly readjusting my clothing to compensate.  There has to be a better way.  Any suggestions??  Many thanks!!

A holster I WOULD NOT recommend is the Bianchi HuSH Holster. It has a metal snap on the retainer strap that fastens to a plastic snap on the holster. I bought one last year and the plastic snap is already showing signs of wear. I used to really like Bianchi holsters, but this one is cheaply made. I don't know why they couldn't use 2 metals snaps instead of a metal and a plastic. At around $80, it cost double what an Uncle Mike's cost and is not any better.

You need a belt. Not just any belt but one that is stiff enough that it won't sag or stretch. No holster will stay put when the belt is so weak that is sags 2". I gave mine to my brother and now I can't remember the brand name. The leather has a plastic web between the layers that keep it in place - even with a 10 1/2" 357 Maximum revolver hanging off it.

Thanks for the replies fellows!  Went to the gun show yesterday and bought a nylon shoulder hoster for the SBHH.  It does a good job of distributing the weight.  Will have to wait for a full day in the woods to really test it out.  Just wanted to say thanks for the replies.  I really appreciate it.  Hope I can help you one day.

You might take a look at these folks products. I purchased one last year and really like it. Mine is one of the Bandito shoulder belts. Excellent quality and workmanship.

I carried a SBHH last year for deer season.  I used a "modified" old police holster on my strong side and made a leg strap to keep it close to my body.  It did give a hefty pull.  If I did it again, I would have invested in a crossdraw holster.  As it turns out, the SBHH is gone and was replaced by a double action revolver.  A little more compact, but will be in the marked soon for a cross-draw for it.  The strong side restricted access to my front pockets and my treestand prevented me from sliding it back on my hip.  Hence, I'd recommend a cross style holster, be it chest or waist level.

If you ever put a scope on it, Cabelas used to carry a nice holster for a scoped revolver.  I have one in Camo and it is very nice for what I use it for.  It has a strap that goes over your head and shoulder area and you can attach the bottom side to your belt if you want.  Very good for weight distribution and very easy to get on and off in a hurry or with heavy clothes.  Just a thought for if you ever scope it.  GS

I have used a SBHH for years. Love it but I know it is tough to keep up. I use a 2" nylon belt from Uncle Mikes and a pair of suspenders. I have one holster that I use and love it. It is a Bianchi cross draw holster that was discontinued a number of years ago. Wouldn't use another and if need be, I will have someone make me another in leather off this design with one minor change. A hunting holster should be open toed not closed. With a cross draw, you can climb, sit down, stand up, and just about anything else you may do while wearing a sidearm.

A friend of mine uses this bandelero type rig that might work. He put this one together himself.
