Hornady Single Shot Pistol bullets in Muzzleloader?
« on: October 20, 2006, 06:59:53 AM »
Has anyone had any luck trying to use bullets such as these (Hornady 35 caliber 180 grain Single Shot pistol) http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=556754 with sabots in a 45 cal muzzleloader?  I would think these would be much more efficient and hopefully more accurate than the regular pistol bullets in the same caliber.  Any thoughts or ideas?

I seriously doubt that bullet will work. That's a centerfire bullet.. unlike a pistol or muzzleloader bullet.

According to the Hornady 6th, the working velocity of the 180gr SSP is 1450 to 2200fps MV, depending on caliber it's used in, it works very well on deer with a MV of ~1700fps in a .357Max as reported in the handgun forum, anything faster than that and it's a little too soft. I considered it for use in my .35Rem Handi, but decided it was too light, FWIW. It should work fine if your barrel will shoot it well, that may be the biggest issue since it's longer than most pistol and ML bullets being a spitzer.
