I inherited an original Stevens 44 1/2!
« on: July 08, 2003, 03:17:30 AM »
A year or two ago I inherited what I thought was a Stevens Model 44 target rifle in 22 LR from my great-grandfather.  It came with the original 4x Lyman external adjustment target scope with bases.  It's in about 9% condition all around, including the case hardening.  I decided this summer to put a good modern scope on it and start taking it to the range and probably the squirrel woods this fall, and I inquired about bases.  CPA/Stevens modifies a Weaver base for it, but they wanted to see pictures, and they told me it was an original 44 1/2, one of only 13,000 rifles made between 1902 and 1916!  I'm tickled pink and can't wait to get my bases and rings to have some fun with it at the range!

I need to make  correction to my previous post.  I had never used the scope for shooting, only the excellent peep sights provided.  I took a closer look at the scope today and it's a Stevens scope No. 368, and in comparison with some of my modern variables, it appears to be around an 8x or 10x power scope.  I'm going to send it to Parsons scompe service to be cleaned up internally, and maybe use it at the range once in a while.  I've order a different base that will accept modern Weaver rings so I can use a more modern scope.  The scope appears to be in excellent condition, and the optics are very clear and bright, it has a screw-on ocular eyepiece that sets the eye relief, the only problem are some flecks that appear and must be on the internal lenses.
