Lure for Muskrats
« on: September 20, 2006, 05:59:26 AM »
Ok after my big ramble on the best lure post. Now I have a question?
I purchased for the first time in my life a bottle of muskrat lure. I have trapped rats most of my life and have never used lure. I always just set blind on feeders, slides, and runs.
But with hugh rat prices looming in the near future I bought a big bottle of lure. lol  I figure I can add a few more rats to the count with the use of lure. The lure jar does have very clear directions on it and I do have a basic idea of how to use lure.
My question is this?
How and where do you use your lure on your Muskrat trapline?

Set your traps as usual  but just add lure.  If rat was going by and wind wrong direction , he or she would  keep right on agoin without stopping but with wind in right direction would pull rat in just like a canine following his nose  into wind with a attractive scent... Also  would possibly get rat to your trap before competitor and this fall  unless you have exclusive rights to an area you will have competition.  Usually you can go in and three days  clear out surplus of rats  in area and move on.... with lure it just helps you attract rats for sure to YOUR traps. Alot of old time trappers didnt use lures either and im talking about fellows that got over a 1000 rats a season.... with rats  being down in population, lure will  help favor the rat into your trap.

Mark, about the only time I use a rat lure,is when using float sets. They need a little extra drawing power.

I use lure at pocket sets for rats. I am not sure how much extra draw the lure has over the hole in the bank at the water line, but I figure that hole fills up with the scent and then the air currents over cool water keep the scent right about a rat's nose height as they swim by. I make a lot of rat pockets with grassy overhangs so that they are not readily visible to other individuals passing by, so maybe they don't have as much eye-appeal to rats either. I've used several different lures and brands with varying success. I like gland lure, especially in spring but it works in fall also. I've also tried lure with noticeable mint added, and I used one that smelled a lot like cherry cough syrup once and it worked OK for me. I think the more natural scents like gland lure, or maybe a food-type like carrot oil, or fennel seed oil, seemed to work better for me. Might not be case in all areas though, but that is what worked for me anyway.
Good luck!
