Dave, the .416 Barrett uses a shortened, necked down .50BMG case, it holds 200gr of powder which is almost double what the Rigby uses!! :o

You could put your powder scale away too , looks like you could just use a measusing cup. 200 grains of powder. Not exactly for the frugal shooter is it. ;D D.C.

Hmm ... let see here.  H&R has the 32" bbl length covered.  Maybe the Ultra slug bbl could be re-chamberd/re-bored.  Now, how do we get the weight up to 32 - 35 lbs?  Who wants to be the first to shoot it?  Lets see a show of hands. LOL.

I am curious as to what actual working pressure this round is topping out at? Anyone know what a 50cal BMG is at?

A did a little search on the 50BMG, pressure is 55-65kpsi, from Lilja..

Quote
I wondered about the strength of this big bolt when compared to the amount of thrust generated by the 50 BMG cartridge. (The details of these calculations were discussed in an earlier article in PRECISION SHOOTING.) The McBros bolt has 2 lugs that are .600" wide and .76" long. The minor diameter of the bolt is .925". From these measurements, the total area in shear is .992 square inches. If we plug a peak chamber pressure of 65,000 PSI into the formula to simulate a fairly stiff handload, we find that the amount of bolt thrust generated is about 23,610 pounds. This thrust load is offset by the lug shear strength, which is approximately 70,950 pounds. This is a healthy margin, as it should be with a big cartridge like this. I also found that the bolt will flex about .0021" under this load, demonstrating again why it becomes necessary to bump case shoulders back between loadings.

The big 1.25" diameter bolt offers quite a bit of camming power. On the action that I checked, the cam retracted the bolt about .170". That's a lot of cam, more than any other bolt action that I'm familiar with.

If it were safe in a Handi I would shoot it.  If I had it I would be hunting with it.  Thats just me though.

It's needless to say that it will never happen in a Handi for several reasons, did you happen to see the price of the .416 Barrett? That's more than I paid for my first new car!!! :o

Kudo's to Barrett.

This round was developed to get their CA shooters back in the game after the liberal morons here made the 50BMG against the law.  Luckily they wrote the law so specifically it was easy to get around.

In addition, since the LAPD went to bat against Barrett and his 50 BMG's, during the campaign for this law, after buying several for their dept, Mr. Barrett himself wrote the chief of police of LAPD to inform him they would no longer service or sell any more firearms to them.  He has kept his word.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
