Teamster outfit
« on: June 24, 2003, 10:30:35 AM »
All right, partners, I need some advice. I am a thinkin' on puting together an outfit like the old time wagon masters or "muleskinners" would wear. Ya see, in that other reality out there , I am a truck driver and I think dressing as a teamster would be a cool tie in to my "real" job. I have a little time, I want to wear it at the 'Ambush' annual shoot in October. So, what kind of clothes were typical of the waggoneers? I kinda figure lace up packer boots would be correct, along with a big floppy hat and a bull whip. What about britches and a shirt? My time period would be about the late 1870s and early 1880s.

If you can find it, look at the "The Expressmen" volume of the Time-Life Books "The Old West".  they have lots of period pictures and paintings of teamsters and how they were clothed.

The floppy hat is mandatory, of course.  Don't forgit the tabacco stains on the front of your shirt/vest!

I looked up the pictures in the Time-Life Books "The Old West" and found the following:

1.  floppy hat, of course!
2.  bandana neckerchief
3.  thin striped shirts (surprise!) looks sorta like you'd expect to find on a train engineer.
4.  ankle high shoes or mid-calf length boots
5.  suspenders with button-down fasteners
6.  baggy woolen trousers.
7.  canvas overcoat (sorta like the ones worn on "Tombstone", but in bleached canvas white).
8.  vacant expression
9.  untrimmed moustache

There you go!
