RMEF?
« on: October 04, 2006, 03:16:10 AM »
I have seen several references lately to the RMEF rifles.  I have become a complete addict to the handis, but have only been around the site for a year or so.  Can someone fill me in on what this is.  Pictures would be awesome.

Thanks

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Some firearm manufacturers produce special run firearms for that organization.  They usually have some type of special designation and/or features such as wood, medallions, etc.

NEF made RMEF rifles in .35 Whelen and .280 Rem.  I'm not sure if they made any other calibers.  And, I believe they were only offered for one year.

Evoc

Thanks for the info.

Are these just special designations on the stock like the N W T F series or was there something special about the gun itself?

On my RMEF .280 the words are spelled out on the side of the receiver with the year, 1996, I believe.  I'm not at home right now and am a bit embarrassed to say that I've not taken the it out of the safe in a while, so I'm going by memory.  There may also be a medallion in the right side of the stock. The wood is cinnamon laminated just like the Ultra's.

Other than the RMEF identification I don't believe they are any different than an Ultra.  The NEF medallion versions that are available also come with laminated wood (Camo), but the stocks are not usually checkered as with the Ultra's.

When I get home this afternoon, I'll pull it out and provide more detail.

By the way, I've been looking for a .35 Whelen to match the .280, but have been unsuccessful, so far.

The RMEFs are SB2 Ultra H&Rs, not NEFs, so they have checkered stocks which sets them apart from the uncheckered NEF special editions. The Whelen has a lovely 26" barrel, too!! ;)

A couple of years ago I picked up a RMEF rifle in a pawn shop. The SB2 had a walnut checkered stock and the RMEF emblem in the stock. It was a RMEF special "Youth Edition" (engraved on the barrel) in .243 Cal. I spoke with the folks at NEF and they told me the rifle was made in 1994 in lots of at least 50 and sold for $240.00 new. The rifle in in very good condition and it has proven to be a tack driver at the range. Think I'll be keeping this one, however, I would love to have the .35 Whelen in the RMEF edition.

Unfortunately, I am unable to post a picture!

Thanks Quick.  I suspected once you read this post you would come through with some pictures.

My .280 is just like the one pictured 'cept mine is dated 1995.

Thanks.
