7600 Carbine: What to do?
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:32:18 AM »
I've been browsing the board for some time and have come to respect the opinions/information presented her.  Now I actually have a question.

Picked up a 7600 carbine in ought-six for a really good price.  Problem is, I've already got an ought-six Model 700 and a barrel for my Encore.  Also have a .35 Remmy 7600 carbine.  Hard to justify keeping the new carbine to the wife.  My thought was to have it rebored so I wouldn't have the problem of duplicate calibers (and just to have something different).  What are the thoughts on turning it into a .35 Whelen.  I considered .338-06 but don't really see gaining much in a carbine platform.

Thanks for any input.

Leave it the way it is and rename it. Call it your hog or coyote rifle when she askes about it.

Sell it at a profit, take that money and the money you were going to use to rebore it and call Grice's and order one of the 35 Whelen rifles.  You will be money ahead and the 35 Whelen is not really a carbine caliber if that makes sense particularly since you already have a 35 Remington Carbine (wish I would have bought one of those before they sold out).  Unless of course, you just want a 35 Whelen carbine and then that is reason enough to do the rebore. Because I and most everyone on this board fully understand the "because I wanted one" concept, I bet we have all been guilty of that before.  I know I have bought a couple of things just to use as a trump card in the I bet you don't have one of these game that we all play.

NH K-9,

I think I can help. Send me the '06 carbine & I'll send you some nice lingerie and chocolates for you to give to your wife. Your wife will think you're a real Romeo, you won't have to worrry about "justifying" anything, & I'll provide a good home for the Remmy...EVERYBODY WINS! ;D

Hey NH K-9,

Should you ever decide that you no longer want the .35 Rem Carbine, please let me know ... I'll buy it.

Thanks.    NY Hunter

LMAO.  The only problem is my wife knows me better than that by now.  If I pulled something even close she'd become suspicious.

NYhunter:
Probably not going to happen.  She shoots nice and, if all goes well, my 18 mo/old son will take an interest in hunting with me and it'll be his first rifle.

If you have to do something, rechamber the 35 to 358 Winchester. One way to deal with your sweetie is with no special reason, other than you love her, get her some roses or chocolates she likes, or any other small kindness she favors. Do this several times a year. After a year of that just up and tell her you have been thinking of another gun for fun. Suggest it then wait a month and mention it again. Eventually you will win her over. Even if she doesn't come around on the firearm thing you will have a better home life. WORKS! Been there, done that, and still do. I also made lots of credit with the sweety by establishing a date night once a week. Whatever works out for your schedules, and the friends and relatives know not to call or come over on that night... the phone is off the hook and the door is not answered. I don't always get the gun when I want it but the wife paid for a partially restored 25 year old pickup that has been hotrodded up sufficiently to get me speeding tickets regularly. She did this without warning just about three years ago. She recently asked me if I liked the new S&W 500 pistols. ... I have high hopes for Christmas this year. Good luck and God Bless. Bandito

Order asynthetic stock for the 7600 and call it yur bad weather rifle. You REALLY NEED one so your "good" rifle donn't get hurt by the rain.It could always be called a home defense weapon.Would be a good one!

A good smith can perform some metal work and presto, a .308 is born!  Barrel is not changed; only the chamber and magazine.  Whether this is is an advantage over the 30-06 is a debate I'll not participate in.  Sort of like what's better, a Mustang or a Camero?
