Help with Springer Rifle.....
« on: April 14, 2003, 10:39:19 AM »
Can anyone help me with more information on the Winchester 1000 air rifle? I've been to their web site and Daisy's and can get no information on who makes them. The reason I ask is our gun club is thinking about buying about 20 of them for loaners for kids to shoot. Are they worth the money? Do they live up to their claim of accuracy? Any information will be helpful. Lawdog

The current Winchester rifles are built for Daisy by Hatsan, in Turkey. I wouldn't waste the money on them. They might be a little hard to handle for young kids, and they have pretty stiff triggers. They aren't much better than most cheap chinese guns. If you want a decent  rifle check out the Slavia  630 or 631. Either is a much better gun, and would probably easier for the kids to handle.

I don't think those guns would be good for kids to start on.  You don't need that much punch for training.  I don't know how much they cost, but you might look into HW 30 - the bargain version of the Beeman R7 - accurate, very mild to cock and shoot.  I've seen good words about the Daisy Avanti series too - very mild shooters but apparently very accurate.

Dand & Dave,

Thank you for the reply, information and the advice.  This is what I was looking for because I couldn't see the club buying something that wasn't going to work or not worth the money.  In the flyer that was sent us they looked good but you can never tell anything from a picture.  What we want is an air rifle that the kids can use for air rifle silhouette shooting.  Our children's rim fire silhouette team is going great.  Just figured that this idea would carry over to air rifles.  You guys think that the HW30 and the Slavia 630 or 631 would work for this purpose?  Lawdog

Lawdog,
 Check with Airgun Express.
They carry good grade German RWS/Diana 24 and 24C (Shorter Carbine great for kids!)Models also maybe the Model 20.
They ARE the RWS service center also.
One stop shopping and maybe you can get your club a package deal...
I have a number of Dianas and recommend the Model 24 highlly, it'll last forever, and needs no modification, repair, or pe-shooting service to work. If you buy a RWS, ya just start start shooting it!
 Good luck!

A good model for new shooters is the Daisy 853, it is the model used by the Jaycees I believe.  It is a single pump pnumatic and very accurate with a target apeture sight included.  I think they call them the Avanti line now, but I believe they still make them.
