Glad I visited Franklin years ago . Will not return if this is the way it is . Proud of the flag and my guns " that are only meant to kill people " . Much like the Twilight Zone where the old coon hunter would not go inside Heaven because his dog was not allowed so he left and goes down the road where his dog is allowed and finds out that the first place was Hell after all and the Devil had lied it was Heaven .

I wrote to the mayor and expressed my displeasure over the thought that at a historical event that you should "clean up" history by banning the battle flag that 1800 Confederates in Franklin died beneath. whether one agrees with the principles these men fought for or not, they deserve the respect of all of us. They and their Union opponents sacrificed for this country and what it was  to become. It has been abused by those who use it as a symbol of hate. I just think "ignorance" when I see it flown in that manner. My GGG grandad is buried in the McGavock Cemetary (Carnton Plantation) along with members of his company of the 55th Tenn Infantry. They didnt HATE, although they DID NOT want Union troops walking around on Tennessee soil....as invaders.. He never owned Slaves and didnt believe in it....but he did believe in Tennessee state right and his rights... check out his grave, number 229 in the Tennessee section S.S. Berry...

Sorry your GGG Grandad did not survive the war , but he sure does have a beautiful final resting place .  I saw his grave , even if I did not know it at the time , one early December morning many years ago and can think of no better place to be laid to rest at or better people to be surrounded by . Shame so many do not appreciate the sacrifice of 620,000 men and boys who died for what they belived in , no matter which side they fought and died for .

seems to me this type of b.s. infringes upon freedom of speech or freedom of expression.
even more crappy is the segment of illegal aliens flying the mexican flag during  their rally, or a black fist posed .this country and its' politicans are so fast to protect certain segments of our society, that they are taking away the rights of the very folks who built this country.
just my 2cents worth on a snowy winter night in the peanut gallery.

fly them flags, it is part of our heritage.

I live in Virginia and see this kind of thing all the time. I have ancestors that fought on both sides, but i like to fly Confederate flags and have SCV license plates on my truck. i'm not into the "hate thing" i'm more into history and try to make friends where ever i go. seems there is always someone around where i live that wants to fuss about my flags. i just tell them: you are doing what you want to do by "fussing", i'm doing what i want to do by "flying" and there's nothing you can do about it!

Lance they have taken it from the top of the SC state house. They are trying to get it removed from the State grounds completely. I fly the Confederate flag and if they keep attacking our rights like this they will have the 2ND amendment removed and our rights. Its a big problem in today's world and yet it gets overlooked.

30-06man, sorry to hear about what's happening down there, my g-g-grandfather was 1st LT. of the 26th South Carolina. Up here in Virginia the state is gearing up for the 150th annv of the war, all kinds of big things planned. one is probably moving the Museum of the Confederacy so people can drive to it easier. another thing is changing the name of the museum, the state figures they need to drop the Confederacy part, don't want to offend anyone. they still don't know what to call it, after all, the whole museum is full of Confederate stuff. speaking of rights, i have a concealed carry permit, got it cause i'm always hauling guns around, figured it would better to be legal, then take a chance of getting arrested for a hidden gun. anyway, some of those anti everything folks publish a magazine a few times a year and pass it out in Virginia. it's got all the names of gun permit holders, the magazine is supposed to make me feel ashamed of having a gun. OH NO!!! everybody knows i'm a gun freak scum bag......... i'm going to see if they will add my picture, maybe even hold a Confederate flag!

Its ashamed how the government tries to mess things up. I feel for yall with the Confederate museum. We still have many places that have the Confederate flag but the NAACP around here is trying to remove it all. Up in Charlotte they changed the name of Confederate road to Martin Luther King Jr road and then they said that the Confederate cemetery could have no Confederate flags.

Yup. I can see how some people would be offended, too. That is, some people go out of their ways to be offended. I call them professional umbrage-takers. The American political Left is infested with 'em. They use a tool known as Pharisaic scandal. That's pretending to be outraged by something they know is perfectly normal. And what could be more normal than re-enactors' carrying the battle flag that Confederate troopers would have carried with them historically?

To me. a "Yankee" of European birth the "Stars and Bars" is a Battle Flag for the Confederate Forces plain and simple. I do not see anything in it beyond the valor, sacrifice and commitment of those forces in battle.

The Civil War. as it is popularly known, has been vilified by those who have not taken the time to study the history leading up to the conflict and its validity. This includes the political, economic , and hatreds on both sides of the war.  Take the time to read up about it.

I will not degrade the sacrifices made by the men in uniform in the South by disenfranchising their banner.

The month of April, 2008 is Confederate History Month.

It is officially recognized by law in Georgia.

I don't know if any other states dare do that, but I certainly wish they would.

Furthermore, this year is the bicentennial of a tall gaunt man, born in a log cabin in Kentucky, who became his nation's President during the War Between the States.

The two hundreth anniversary of the birthday of President Jefferson Davis is Tuesday 03 June 2008.

We should start now to organize some sort of appropriate observance.

Did you know that ever since 1906, United States law officially recognizes all Confederate soldiers as United States military veterans, and requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to maintain the graves of Confederate veterans?

Have you ever visited the Confederate War Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery?

Corporal Jonathan Trueblood, who served in the North Carolina Seventh Regiment of the Confederate Senior Reserves. His unit guarded Union prisoners of war, fought at the battle of Bentonville (as part of the North Carolina Forty-Fourth Infantry Regiment), and he was among the soldiers present when General Joseph Eggleston Johnston surrendered to General William Tecumseh Sherman.

Did you know that our Memorial Day originally began as a Confederate custom, which became known as Decoration Day?

You might be interested in researching the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy web sites.

Also, there's a web site devoted to the stories of Black Confederate soldiers.

The only Jewish military cemetery outside of Israel is located in Richmond, Virginia, wherein lie the remains of Jewish Confederate soldiers.

Cherokee, led by Chief Stan Watie, were in the Confederate Army, and were the last Confederate soldiers to surrender.

Hmmm - - - , since April is Confederate History Month, maybe someone will dare display the Confederate Battle Flag at the National Tartan Day celebration, and at the annual Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland?

Aw, shucks, folks are just so darned scared, it's almost too much to hope for!

Thank you.

It would be nice if the Confederate unit would make a political statement, and show up flying the most hateful flag the world has ever known, and the ACLU has defended as freedom of speech. Of course, I'm talking about the Nazi flag.

In fact, I wish everyone who has been forced to remove the Stars and Bars, or a nativity scene, would replace them with Nazi flags and symbols. If nothing else, it could result in a law against displaying these truly offensive items, and who knows ? We might even get back the right to display the other two things ?

There is a statue honoring Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, just outside of Nashville, Tn on I-65 that had the confederate flags removed for a while. They were removed for several months and finally they were put back up. It is ridiculous how politically correct people have become. It is to the point now where people have become so ignorant, because they are conforming so that no ones feelings get hurt.

While looking for a picture of the memorial I found this.

This is such a disgrace! I hope whoever did this gets caught and has the book thrown at them.

The "REBEL" Flag?

The red back ground signifies the BLOOD OF CHRIST.
The blue back ground in the bars signify HEAVEN.
The white trim along the bars, PURITY OF CHRIST.
The twelve stars signify the TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL.
The center star signifies CHRIST HIMSELF.

REBEL FLAG? I think not.

The FLAG OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES, SIGNFING "FREEDOM AND STATES RIGHTS" is what I prefer. But that's just my opinion. This Cherokee thinks his fore fathers were right not to surrender. But that's just my opinion also.

States rights ended at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Will we ever get them back. Probably not. Slavery was alive and well in the north as well as the south. This war was about STATES RIGHTS, and the tariff on cotton and other textiles. Lincoln was not the savior of the black man. He freed them on paper to stir them up, and break the southern economy. McClellan was getting his butt kicked by one of the greatest Generals that this earth has ever had walking on it. Lee was a disciple of STATES RIGHTS, and a damn good one. If that fool Booth had not shot him (Lincoln), the slave would now be calling himself American Africans, instead of African Americans. He was going to "re-patriote them" back to Africa.
This political correctness make me tired. The "FLAG OF THE CONFEDERACY" has always stood for FREEDOM. Still does at my house. The 50' stature on our court house lawn is not of Abraham Lincoln, it is a of a Southerner, and the Daughters of the Confederacy keep him lookin good. When a Confederate grave is occasionally found here, a funeral is given, and folks still turn out. The Star Spangled Banner is played, but so is "DIXIE".

I believe the war of northern aggression ain't over yet.   I've been thinking of flying the Stars and Stripes upside down     for a country in distress.  With the loss of freedoms taking place everyday as well as attacks on our borders and our constitution I think its about time to listen to the teachings of our forefathers. There needs to be a revolution ever decade to prevent the government from becoming all too powerful.  The tree of liberty needs to be refreshed from time to time with the blood of tyrants and patriots.  I believe those are sayings from Thomas Jefferson.  If the illegals can fly the mexican flag above the Stars and Stripes I think we can fly our flags anywhere we so choose in this country and defend them.  Just my 2 cents on the subject. For whatever thats worth. Not much these days.

If I was black, and my ancestors had been slaves. I don't think I would hold the Confederate flag in high regard.
I understand that many southerners, with justification, honor the Confederate flag as a symbol of valor and sacrifice.
To some, it seems more like a Nazi flag of a despotic regime.

The war was about states rights not slavery. That is just an ignorant and all too common misconception that people believe. If they took they time to look up unbiased facts about what the flag stands for then they would know that. It was the American flag that flew over all slave ships not the Confederate flag. It doesn't matter if you are black, white, tan, etc. the flag still means the same thing.

I feel the same as all y'all... except I don't believe it's "the" Flag of the Confederate States.  The "Bonnie Blue Flag" was quite different from the "Confederate Battle Flag" which is what I believe y'all are discussing.

Secession Flag
"Bonnie Blue"

The First National Confederate Flag
"Stars and Bars"

The Second National Confederate Flag
"Stainless Banner"

The Third National Confederate Flag
"Final Edition"

"Army of Tennessee Battle Flag"

There were many other variations of the battle flag depending on what part of the country the war was happening.

Here's the battle flag for the 18th Alabama known as the Fourth Pattern Hardee Flag

And you can find many other battle flags of the Confederacy here: http://www.confederateflags.org/
