44 MAGNUM....... available everywhere, made by everyone, the most choices( bullet style, weight, velocity), it is enough for deer out of a handgun, it's plenty good out of a rifle. Buy one you won't be disappointed!

I would go with the 44 also, unless you reload then all bets are off.

I figured most folks would tell me the 44 mag.   In regards to reloading, I am just now starting to learn how to reload for my 223 and '06.

I have a Ruger Deerfield in .44, great gun, will drop them in their tracks out to 100 yards or so.  My wife loves her Marlin 1894C in 357 mag.  158 SP bullets also do a good job out to 100.  While the 357 may not have as much ump as the .44 she can shoot it all day at the range with no recoil problems.  Even in the Deerfield the .44 is at the top range of her recoil limit.

Well, my favorite is .41 mag, I have it in my ruger and in a marlin 1894, I have been working on loads so I can find one load that both guns like, getting closer, but not quite there yet. I have found loads that each of them like, but I am looking for that golden load for both  ;D

I have to cast a vote for the ancient .45 Colt.  Using a modern action and good handloads you can easily match the .44 mag performance and have a larger frontal area.  It's a compromise between the .44 and .454, but in the end, you will not be wrong buying any of the 'major' handgun calibers.

Unless you are a very good shot and limit ranges, I'd avoid the .357.  It certainly has the killing ability, but the larger calibers will do the job with more authority.  .41 mag, .44 Mag, .45 colt, .454 all will do a great job and all can be loaded down for economical practice and less pounding, although a pistol chambered lever gun can't be too bad.

I use a M92 Rossi in 44 with hand loads  240gr XTP with 24gr H110 and mag primers.
A Rem 700 in 30-06 165 Hornady BT's 56.5gr IMR 4250
A Rem 700 classic in 350 Rem Mag 250gr Speer 250gr Speer Hor Cors 57gr 4320 with a COL of 2.930( modded magizine).
I love them all depends on where I go for the day.  I have not taken any game with the XTP  yet but on expansion testind they were great no core/jacket seperations.  They flattened out real good aginsta hard dirt back stop at 50 yards.  My only complaint is it shoot REALLY high in my rifle, toem for new sights!!

i have to vote for the 357 max.  Not a lot of followers, but has every bit of the 100-125 range and pleasant to shoot all day.  If you are reloading, it is easy to work with.  I love mine.

My S&W 460 Mag loaded with 260 gr. Nosler Partitions.  I can also shoot the 454 Casull's or even the 45 L/C.  All three will work well on deer.

I also like the .357 max. in the Contender.  In the wheel gun, either the .41 or .44 mag.
