Oops at my office
« on: October 05, 2006, 09:35:48 AM »
I was out of the building this day (Tuesday this week) but someone screwed up. :o :o

Gun left in courthouse bathroom

Leader-Telegram Staff

A man visiting the Eau Claire County Courthouse Wednesday morning found a gun in a second floor restroom.

The handgun belonged to a reserve deputy with the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department, Capt. John Vogler said.

The man who found the gun turned it in at the district attorney’s office.

Court security officials were called to the district attorney’s office and determined the gun belonged to Chuck Halbleib, who was working as a plainclothes bailiff.

Vogler called the incident a serious security breach.

The incident will be addressed as a personnel matter after an internal inquiry and review of Sheriff’s Department policies, Vogler said.

Halbleib has been a reserve deputy since April.

I left my watch in a bathroom when I was back in collage once.  I have never left a gun laying around anywhere though.

I just heard today that the deputy resigned on Thursday, following the Wednesday incident.
I'd heard that he was advised to resign. :(

Working as a plain clothes deputy.....he most likely removed the weapon before using the facility and after washing up left and forgetting to re-attach his weapon. A serious mistake no doubt, but it could happen. I'd have to check this guy's record before crucifying him. He seriously mind blanked out but to nail him hard on this seems to feed the anti gun fear crowd, or for us gun enthusiast to join the gun fear movement by proxy. One could easily glibbly say, "Geez, I left my gun in the restroom, but some guy gave it back. Where you want to eat lunch?" And this would probably be the case 25 years ago.

.................TM7

Why would we expect someone to be perfect......I can see this happening as mistakes happen every day.....Is this a case of one play making the game?...Probably lost a good LEO.

...I tend to agree with Victor Charlie and TM7 on this one. A serious 'screw up " yes...but so is passing a stopped school bus..and I did that once, several years ago.

Glad the policeman didn't string me up on the nearest oak tree ! In fact,  I stopped immediately, before he could stop me and said
Ii had no real defense except poor observation on my part... (opposite side or six lanes with grass center mall). Surprisingly, the policeman didn't ticket me.

I am sure the deputy did not intend on leaving his handgun any more than I intended passing that bus.

Let's not allow the antis to persuade us condemn each other....the public may just have lost a good (but human) officer.

Victorcharlie I wounder would you have the same cavalier attitude if it were a surgeon working on you or a loved one who made a mistake?  Oh well, $%^$^% happens does not cut it in some situations.  Pilots, air traffic controllers, surgeons, etc, need to be on top of their game when they are on duty.  And I think a LOE should be too.

With out casting any stones, I have to say this is a bad mistake. But their are none among us who have not drop the ball at least once. I would hate to see a man lose his job over one mistake.
Heck most of us would be looking for a job once a week.
About a week ago I got a call to a casino to unlock an amored truck the they  had locked them selves out. This little slip would be grounds for getting fired. The local locksmith gave them my number and I opened the truck for them. Knowing this would cost them thier jobs, I showed them a more secure way to keep track of their keys. And then told them I was never there.
My point being these guys do the same thing every day and do it well but they are still foulable humans. As are the rest of us. We expect perfection and strive to be perfect. But most of the time we are off the mark so we keep trying.

Locking yourself out of a truck is one thing,  screwing up on some paperwork and costing your employer some money is one thing,  leaving a loaded firearm in a semi-public crapper is another matter.  I'm not saying he should have lost his job necessarily but IMHO strong disciplinary action was called for. There are mistakes that could cost time or money and then there are major blunders that could lead to personal injury or death. This was a major blunder that could have ended up with very serious consequences if that gun had fallen into the wrong hands.
