257 Roberts vs 25-06
« on: October 06, 2006, 05:53:09 PM »
I found a 7600 in 257 Roberts NIB. I have it on layaway right now. I never thought I would find one so a couple of years ago I bought a 7600 in 25-06. It has the black/gray laminate stock. I think it is but ugly. I mounted the cheap leupold 4X12 Rifleman scope last year and planned to sight it in this year and hunt with it. But since I have the 257 Roberts on the way I was think of selling the 25-06. What do you guys think. MIKE.

I would wait until I had shot the 257 to see how it performs.  I have never shot the 7600 in 257 but I have shot several other rifles and there seems to be little middle ground with the 257 they either shoot really good or really bad and it does seem to matter much what rifle it is in.  Don't take this as a condemnation of the 257 because it is a really good cartridge and I like it a lot, it seems to me to be a finicky cartridge.  What I mean by this is you sometimes have to play with it a lot to find a load that it likes whereas there are some cartridges (308 for example) that almost everything shoots fairly well in it.  If you shoot it and it performs well you can always sell the 25-06 then if you want to but if you sell the 25-06 now and the 257 doesn't work out then you will have a problem.  With that said in a 7600 I would perfer the 257 to the 25-06 so I hope it works for you.

Your 7600 has a 22" barrel and it's a little short for a 25-06 to get it's full potential. If the 257 shoots ok I'd keep it. I have the laminated stock 7600 in 7mm-08. I buffed the finish on the stock to give it a satin look.

Ok I will wait to see how it shoots. How did you buff the stock out? How does it look? Thanks, MIKE.

I removed the stocks and using a synthetic sanding pad I buffed the finish until it looked like a satin finish. You can use fine steel wool too or so I'm told. You want to alter the finish coat not remove it so go slow and use light pressure.

After lot's of thought I sold the 25-06 to pay for the 257 Roberts. The Roberts was what I always wanted, the stock on the 25-06 was ugly and money is tight. MIKE.

Got a 760 in 257 that is a great lil gun.Just bought a 25-06 with the grey/black laminate and think the stock look realy neat.I also have 760 carbines in 270,280,308,and 30-06.These are great rifles that are plenty accurate.

Wondering Mike did your 25-06 come with sights on it.

I've had several 2506's and hunted with them, bought a Roberts and never looked back. ;)

Ok the 25-06 is gone and the 257 Roberts arrived last week. Went to the range today and sighted in the 4X12 Rifleman that was on the 25-06. I used the Federal 120 grain nosler partitions. After a few sighters I put three in the bull at 100 yards the size of a quarter. Good to go. I am using it on opening day, this Saturday upstate NY. MIKE.

Glad to hear your rifle shoots good. It's always nerve racking to me when I get a new gun and I'm wondering how it's going to shoot. It's always a huge relief when they do shoot good, I have had a few that didn't shoot to my expectations and those weren't fun at all.
Congratulations on getting a good shooting rifle and I hope you have a great hunting season with it!

Good Shooting!

Made a big mistake. I did not try feeding live shells from the mag, I single fed them right into the chamber at the range. Maybe the federal ammo is longer?Well at least a found out before I went into the woods. Hunted 2 1/2 days so far and saw nothing. I used the 7400 30-06 the first two days but switched to the 7600 in 35 Rem this morning. I will figure out the Roberts when I get home. MIKE.
