Montana Pheasant Opener is in the books!
« on: October 07, 2006, 05:20:14 AM »
11 of us shot 31 roosters out of the first creek bottom we walked.I counted 53 roosters flushed.3 young boys each shot their 3 bird limit. My Lab paid for her keep.I sailed to 2 roosters way out in a stubblefield and she brought both of them back. The coyote and coon sign were thick around a spring in the creek bottom. One of the guys wife cook us sausage, eggs, pancakes, toast and homemade perserves for breakfast before the hunt.I worked all night so I left after the first drive. It was raining lightly and the birds held real tight.2 young Labs really shined this morning. Those young boys were real interested in the coon and coyote sign, maybe I can get them out on the line this year.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

Sounds like nice outing and being able to snoop fur sign also. Trees are past their peak in color here and bvr  are working hard on thier winter food supply cache.   Seeing more skunks and coon on roads plus  fox, yotes must have  whelped pups somewhere else  behind the house as fox running all over the place... good thing..

I just want to thank you for forgetting your duck stamp...this was the opener of big ducks in NM.  A lot of divers and many teal ...few Pins and Gads...we took a two day limit handily in 1.5 of evening and this AM's flight. ;)

Wacky do woodys  come  your way at all?   While bear hunting  and scouting coon sign and cat i saw a few flocks of woodys. But supposed to be in 20s  the next few days so they will be leaving pronto  along with the blue and green wing teal.

i've killed some Woodies here but its nothing you can count on.  Aboout the only subtantial food for them are Russian Olives and they don't mast heavy every year.  Then too, you need water and ya need it in the right places. :(

I've been shooting a limit of roosters daily,3.We had to eat Pheasants 3 nights so as not to be over the possesion limit.I have a good friend here from Missouri. We walked one slough this morning and shot 6 roosters. My Lab Belle found 3 birds that we never would have got.She just gets better with each hunt.Found a lake with big Canadas, mallards and swans on it.Got permission to hunt the field the geese and mallards are feeding in.Going early in the morning. The last 2 days we have seen coyotes out hunting at all hours of the day.It has snowed twice here but melted off today.
