Linebaugh or Bowen
« on: October 07, 2006, 05:43:17 AM »
I am considering having my stainless Bisley 45 made into a 5-shot.  I think Linebaugh has about 1/2 as long a wait as Bowen.  If you could pick a custom revolver (5-shot 45-Colt) which cistom smith would you prefer?  They appear to be within a couple hundred of each other in price.  They might be the same as it looks like Linebaughs pricing is less of a package than Bowens.  I want a 5-shot tight accurate revoler--and I'd like fit and finish on mating of the grip frame to be fine.  It is off set currently to one side and it drives me nuts.  I think I like the lines of the factory style barrle better than the barrel banded like on the Nimrod--so I guess its called "long Hunter" by Bowen.

PM me if you are interested and I will send you some Pics of Alan Hartons five shot Bisley.  He is currently finishing up a 475 for me.

To answer your question, let me ask you why you think the wait for the Bowen is twice as long?  Clements is about 6 to 8 months and Forkin and Stroh are both about a year.

they both make top shelf guns. Don got by the waiting list. In my experience you can about double what any smith tells you. My preference would go a little toward John because theres just something about have a linebaugh gun build by a linebaugh that makes a little more sense to me. Another option is dustin lnebaugh. He build me a .500 and its one of the best built and beautiful sixguns ive ever seen anywhere.

Absolutely nothing against Linebaugh but I would go with Bowen. The guy that originally owned my SBH had him do a trigger job on it and it's unreal. Plus I can drive to his shop in about 30 minutes. ;D

Don't have a Linebaugh (wish I did) But I do have a Bowen and I LOVE it! Got mine earlier this year. Just took a moose with it a couple of weeks ago!  About the wait:  I expected a long wait on mine, I got it back in about half of the time that Mr. Bowen quoted me.  Now maybe I was just lucky and he had a slow week I don't know.  But it was fast and I couldn't be more pleased.  I would buy another Bowen in a minute it's that well built and smooth!  But from what I can tell Mr. Linebaugh's are the same way.  My opinion you couldn't go wrong with either maker!

John or Dustin Linebaugh should be able to do what you are looking for.  A friend of mine used to post on here quite a bit, TScottO, and he had John build him a gun - was extremely satisfied.  Let me dig around and try and find some pics.

I recently picked up a Linebaugh 500 Vaquero Bisley on the classifieds over at sixgunner.com.  The frame is marked *20* so it is probably an early gun.  Or at least an early one in this style.  The workmanship is IMPRESSIVE. This sixgun is very tight with absolutely no play.  I got my reloading components for it this afternoon and tried a load to see where it would print. I can tell you already this one is going to be a shooter. Talk about a bear buster.

I have also been shooting my Alan Harton 475 quite a bit. It appears to be dimensionally perfect.  With proper ammunition that thing is a tack driver. I cant get over the workmanship by our top smiths in this country.

Lloyd, I shot it today with a 420 grain commercial cast bullet on a big charge of H110.  2 cylinders full.  Thank the Lord it didnt shoot to point of aim.  My hands were shaking for a while after........On the second cylinder I had 4 bullets touching at 20 yards, but I wasnt man enough to get that 5th one in there.  What a machine!

bench the big ones definatly takes some extream consentration. I still laugh at the guys that claim the .475 kicks more then the .500. It just doesnt make sense to me. Maybe with low pressure .500 loads but how could a 450 grain bullet pushed by 32 grains of 110 kick less then a 400 pushed by 27! The .500s are definately animals at that level.

Since we are showing our drawers and publishing loads the one I shot was 30.0 grains of H110 on a 420 cast. I am glad I did it, it really wasnt that bad. I have to say I could handle it if I needed to. Sure wouldnt want it to be my everyday load.

I could really scare you and tell you some of the loads AL shoots in his. They make that 30 grain 420 load seem about midrange. Hell pal it makes me flinch just to watch him. youll find when you get into the 30 grain range that every grain of powder you add substantialy increases recoil.

I always thought Bowen would build my next custom but ever since I saw that lil 4 5/8” Oct barrel 475 Bisley Vaquero Dustin has pictured on his sight, he will probably be next.

Take Care,
Scott
