Here are some picture from the Octobermonthly shoot

Only 5 guns were on the line this week.

Gun one

Notice these cannon are shot from a box. This is so the cannon can be raised up enough for the shooter to lay behind the gun and aim.

Gun two

This gun belongs to Canadian Getntlemen. He and I are the only ones in the club without a pronounced accent.

Gun four

There are two gun builders in the club. One build Filde Guns the other builds ships cannons.

Gun five being aimed in by Mike Pilgrim

Mike is one of the "Characters" of the local Durban Gun Scene.

No I didn't forget gun three. I was shooting it and I made a movie of it firing.

I assume you're shooting spheres.

The shootin' looks good. Maybe, you would do better if your cannon wasn't so tired. Looks like it just wanted to lay down and take a nap....

The projectiles are round ball furnished by the club,as is powder and wad.

Yes that little gun does like to jump off the box. I am going to build a flat platform for it to shoot from and it will have a back stop to keep it from coming off the box.

The range is 25 meters.

Yes this is a tough assignment under some very primitive conditions in a Third world country. Here are some pictures of the harsh conditions we live in.

Yes, it does make for a nice last tour. I certainly paid my dues working for this organization. I am over here for at least 2 years, but can reup for up to 5 years. I will be eligible to retire at the end of the 2 year tour, and had planned on it. Now that I have found they have cannon shooting here, I just may stay for the full 5. Staying 5 enhances my annuity. So I have nothing to loose. every thing to gain.

Hi DD, first want to say, hope you really enjoy your "holiday" in SA.

Really hope that you will get a chance to see more of it, there is a lot of very nice places to visit.

Next, and please don't laugh at me now,( think it going to look funny, a SA guy asking you what is going on in SA) I'm very intrested in BP cannons and want to know more about our laws, availablity or makers of them in SA. Since you are part of a club in SA, and I don't know anybody in this hobby back home, I was wondering if it will be possible if you can put me in contact with someone who can help me.

Welcome to the board Henk, glad to have a real South African stop by.

The South African Miniature Cannon club is located in Durban. They have been shooting as a club since the early 1970's.

If you will send me a PM with your Email address, I will pas it to the Chairman of the club and he can talk withyou about South Africa's rules.

The north-eastern side in a place called Louis Trichardt, But I'm currently working in Iraq. Only back home every 10-11 weeks for 3 weeks.

Louis Trichardt is in Limpopo Province up near Zimbabwe isn"t it?

Next time you are home and if you have time on the first Sunday of the Month Come down to Durban for teh Monthly Cannon shoot. The Club will even put you behind a cannon and let you shoot.

just wondering... what makes it officially a "miniature cannon"?

Is there a bore size limitation?

I ask because I was thinking about organizing a mini-gun club at the local range that I help run.

I guess I can make up any rules I want, but was wondering what others called "miniature-cannons". I was thinking about something like 1 inch nominal max (say 1.100" ).

We have a mountain for a backstop, but as it is primarily a pistol range the distance is only about 60 yards or so on the longest outdoor range. A really big gun could cause "issues", like really big balls coming back. As a range officer during bowling pin matches, I have been hit many times by the likes of 44 and 45 ricochets off bowling pins with no significant injuries, but would prefer to avoid direct contact with anything weighing a pound or more.

Do they ever do mortars as well?

These guys have been shooting together for over 30 years. The have a set of Rules but nobody has looked at them in years. They were going to bring me a set last shoot but nobody knew where they were.

Here are the rules that I know.

Match.

Two strings of 6 shoots, best 5 count on a 50 Meter International Pistol Target. Each string scored separate.
Total possible 100 points. Range 25 meters.

Scoring is both on raw score and handicap. So the have they High shooter and then the Match scores. Handicap is the average of your monthly scores subtracted from 100

Cannons.

They don't know for sure what the upper caliber limit is, but generally .577 is all they allow.
Smooth bore and round ball only
May patch or use wad
No sights, may use false muzzlle

All Cannons arre loaded on Command of the Range Officer.
Black powder only.
Priming is with a mixture of fast burning smokeless and black powder
When all cannons are loaded and aimed in the Range officer walks the line with a linstock and fires each gun.

About the caliber limit. Years ago when they first started shooting they noticed that South African Law prohibited the possession of a Cannon. They all got a bit nervous and knew that SAPS was goiing to swope down on them and carry them all off to prison. They wrote a letter to the Minister of Justice explaining what they had and asked for a definition of a cannon. The Minister of Justice visited one of their shoots and saw what the were shooting and gave them a letter saying these weren't cannons as defined under South African Law. The largest caliber they had at the time was .577. So that has been there rules. At least as the folks can remember.

If I were doing a Match I think I would have Divisions.

Under 1 inch at 25 Yards
Under 2 inch at 50 yards
Under 1/4 Scale at 100 yards

No they don't do mortars...yet, but I think they are coming. One of the members did a mortar from a photo. I have a picure but no powder can.This thing needs a powder can. Sunday is the shoot and I hope he brings it.

Another member has asked for drawings of a brass Mortar and hinted that he has a great large piece of tennis ball size bronze.
