I'M JUST GETING INTO THIS AND I WOULD LIKE SOME OPINIONS ON BULLBERRY AND FOX RIDGE OUTFITTERS BESIDES THE PRICE DIFFERANCE . FRED USES A new steel Weaver style base that mounts with 6 screws, that is never going to move. WHAT DOES F.R.O. USE? HOW ABOUT BARREL QUALITY , 250 FOR A  F.R.O. OR 290 FROM FRED.OR HOW ADOUT V.V.C.G. OR SSK? SO MANY OPTIONS TO MANY QUESTIONS

I have SSK and VVC. Both are of excellent quality, however, SSK charges way too much. His prices went up recently and are the most expensive of all makers. All offer the weaver base with 6 holes. A new name to try is MBM (On Target Technologies), if I'm allowed to use their name(thanks), if not(sorry).

I may not be the right person to answer your questions.    After shooting Contenders for nearly 34 years (plus Encores), and as someone who personally knows the owners at SSK, BBW & VVCG (FRO is still just T/C), I have a very strong opinion on "whose barrels to buy".     So, without getting into the sorted details (good and bad), I'll just say that ALL of my barrels are (and always will be) either made by Fred/Bullberry or JD/SSK.   FWIW

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Pipedpoe,

I recently asked this same question. See “New barrel recommendations” further down on this page.

One of the reasons I am considering a “custom” barrel from either Bullberry, Virgin Valley or SSK , has to due with the length of the throats on factory barrels. I currently have a blue 7-30 Waters barrel, and have found the complaint about T/C throats being too long to be true. From different articles that I have read, it appears that T/C produces their barrels to accommodate all bullet lengths in a particular caliber. If you are using one of the heavier bullet weights in that caliber, this is to your advantage, as the long throat will be better for seating the longer bullets. Since I plan on using my  7-30 for nothing larger than deer, I have chosen to stick with 120 and 130 grain bullets. These lighter bullets are shorter than the heavier bullet weights, and therefore must be seated out further in the brass in order to allow them to reach the rifleing. I have even read of instances where the throats were so long that the bullets could not be seated out far enough to reach the rifleing.

The other part of my reason to buy a custom barrel stems from the fact that T/C does not produce the 7-30 in stainless. So if I want a stainless barrel, I must go to one of the custom shops.

I recently contacted Fred at Bullberry  and Steve at Virgin Valley to check  on the lead time for a new barrel and to ask questions to be sure I am getting the best barrel to meet my needs. Both were very helpful, answered all my questions and even made a point or two regarding characteristics I was unaware of. The downside of ordering a barrel from Fred, is his 4 month lead time. Virgin Valley quoted 8 weeks. Part of your decision will be based on your immediate need for the barrel versus the extra cost for the shorter lead time.

Since the 7-30 doesn't really kick, the six screw mounting set up is a non-issue for me.

Best of luck with whatever you choose. Keep us posted.

Just to throw another name in the mix you might want to consider E.ARthur Brown..www.eabco.com.  They manufacture their own barrels for T.C...both Contender and Encore..and are an outlet for Fox Ridge Outfitters also.

jeff b. HHI 7241, Since MBMCo. is an advertiser of this site why would you assume it not OK to mention them? SSK and E. A. Brown who also make such barrels are likewise advertisers on this site. VVCG was but is no more an advertiser. Fred at BBW isn't and never has been. Fred told me he was selling barrels faster than he could make them and couldn't see any benefit in paying for advertising.  If that's the case I reckon he's right.

I have personal experience with TC Factory barrels, Fox Ridge Custom Shop barrels. SSK barrels and VVCG barrels as well as the Bellm rechamber jobs on factory barrels. I have no experience with barrels from Bullberry or EABCo. so have no opinion to offer on them.

For a barrel in a caliber offered by TC or the FR Custom Shop they really are a good buy. More than accurate enough for 99% of shooters and uses to which you might put them. For barrels in calibers not offereed by TC in one or the other place I must admit to a bias toward SSK's work. I've used a lot more of theirs and never been dissatisfied yet. So they cost a bit more. They also sell for a LOT more used if like most of us you tend to sell and trade them off from time to time.

:D Someone else to consider with a short lead time. Last fall Gary Reeder made me a custom contender carbine barrel in 7GNR (super improved version of the 7-30 waters). 8 weeks delivery time. The barrel is a tack driver. This spring I had Gary rechamber a barrel. Received the barrel back 10 days after the day I shipped. For the $60 rechamber charge Gary buffed out the caliber, custom engraved the new instead of overstamping and reblued the barrel. I am just a regular customer and he always takes the time to answer my questions without feeling pressured.
