L & R flintlock for pistol
« on: April 15, 2003, 03:01:58 AM »
I need a lock for a pistol. It must be L & R, or built-to-order. And I don't want to think about a built-to-order flintlock's price. So I'm trying to locate an out-of-production lock, but I cannot remember the exact model and size of for what I'm looking.

I think I recall L & R Lock company making one or two flintlocks that are smaller than the Bailes lock presently available.

Bailes' lock plate is 4-3/4 x 7/8 inches. I think this is too large, even for a horse pistol.

I repeat, the flintlock must be L & R. The reason doesn't matter.

I would appreciate the model names, identification numbers, lock plate dimensions, and a description of the locks. Are they available L-H and R-H? Have they rollers on frizzen springs, rainproof pans, and so on? A graphic would be appreciated, too.

Kevin,

"Manton" and "John Bailes" flintlocks are the same lock with different names.  R.E. Davis makes "Becky's Tiny Lock" whose lock plate is 4.19 x .80 while the "Manton/Bailes'" lock plate is 4.7 x .86. On a pistol this difference in length is enormous.

Unfortunately, Davis' lock is primitive compared with the Bailes -- I do not refer to quality, but to design.

If I were able to reduce the length of the L & R lock without reducing its grace, this would solve my problem. But I have no idea how much surplus length there is, front and rear.
