Help Which .223 barrel
« on: October 09, 2006, 04:52:17 AM »
I have a problem.
I think I am becoming a handi-holic.
I have a 1 year old handi in 25-06 (26") for deer hunting
but I am wanting a 223 barrel for the other 50 weeks of the year.
Cheaper to shoot, less recoil and report.

The problem is i want all of the 223 barrels.
every thing from the superlight youth for a truck gun
and calling coyote to 24" heavy fluted for long range target and varment.

Would you guys tell me how yours well shoot, how fast they get hot, and how handi they are to carry.

Barr25-06

I have the non-flutted bull barrel 223 and just love it , I have put over 1000 rounds down it and the more i shoot it the better it shoots .

I have found that mine does not shoot the 45 grain bullets well , the 50 .52 , 53 and 55s all will do a wonderful job with the 53 grain Sierra HP and the Hornady 55 grain V-Max diong the best .

I used it for my go-to gun at a spring P-dog shoot and was pleasently suprised on how well it did out past 500 yards .

I use both the 24" Ultra Bull Barrel, and a 22" Standard contour in 223. Both shoot great.
But if I were to have only 1, it would be the 24" Ultra barrel. Even though it is a bit heavier and just a tad longer, it's my go to gun. I can always trust it to deliever. Plus it's the nicer of the 2, sporting some new lam's 8) It's been great for long range targets as well as varmints.
Still I love the little 22" as well, I have it in a synthetic stock with a 3-9 Mil-Dot Tasco for a truck gun. It's very light and balanced. And even though the scope isn't top notch, it fits this packagae very well and has held zero ever sense I got it in a trade.
Another thing nice about a 223 is the ability to handload it with reduced loads. Something I have just started experimenting with, and it's a ton of fun. Anything from 22LR, 22Mag, and Hornet velocities to full power 223 loads. It's so versitile.

Yup....I would say you are.... :D :D :D :D

I don't have the 223's...but...as far as getting hot and how they carry isn't much different than all the rest...The bull barrels don't heat up as fast..but they do heat up...and they carry well....Also...if you reload...take a look at the Lyman #48 reloading manual...they have 11 different reduced(starting) loads for the 75 & 87 grain bullets that will put the hurt on any coyote you hunt...and won't be so hard on your ears, shoulder or wallet ;)

Sounds good barr25-06,I just put a used 22inch 223 barrel on mine about 4 weeks ago,and I'm very happy with it.Handloads are staying right at or under half inch for three shots with it.Good luck with new handi, and be sure to keep us updated on how it shoots for ya
