40 gr. nosler ballistic tip vs coyotes ??????
« on: October 09, 2006, 12:31:33 PM »
I am planning to knock off a few eastern coyotes this year and want to use my 223 which really shoots 40 grain ballistic tips well.
Has anyone used these on coyotes ? What kind of performance can I expect ?

It will do a fine job.  Larry

I don't see any problems using the 40gr B-T on coyotes, I assume the country where you are hunting is dense where a long shot would be only occsaoinally be made. I would think that a 50 or 55 gr might work but for long shots but the 40gr will work just fine. If you are planning to save the hides for sale you may want to reconsider the bullet you use."All kind of if's " Just a matter of trying all your options for results. Good luck.......Joe.......

50 or 55 at yardage?  Completely devasting at 500 yards on large prairie dogs.

I think you would be better off with 55 gn. bullets. In the chest the lite bullets will do an excellant job, but if your shooting at a running dog I don`t think you`l have near enough penatration.

at close range you will have dismal performnce with the ballstic tip(it will knock the dog down with a flesh wound.but as you continue to call he will be back on his feet kickin in the afterburner headed away. ).at high speed they do what they are made to do...BLOWUP. I have found they give no penatration at all at ranges that are close.(.22cal bullets  out of a.223) out at longer ranges they work fine.they will get penatration.this goes for the 55 gr bullets also.
But hey...it's just a filthy coyote..and you can shoot them with anything from what I have read..

Varmint Grenade™Frangible Core—Explosive Fragmentation

Created by exclusive technology Barnes developed for military applications, the new Varmint Grenade™ bullet features a highly frangible, copper-tin composite core. It remains intact at ultra-high velocities, yet fragments explosively on impact. Virtually vaporizes in ground squirrels and prairie dogs. Delivers pinpoint accuracy for dependable long-range kills. These lead-free bullets will be offered in 36-grain .22 caliber and 62-grain 6mm bullets in 100- and 250-bullet packs.

Like I said..some bullets are made to blow up with minamual penatration.and should not be used on larger animals..IE:Filthy coyotes..
