45-70 hard cast hand loads

I want to load some Oregon Trail,  hard cast gas check 350 grn  bullits in my 45-70 . I would like to load them pretty heavy. Will my present load of 56 grns of IMR 3031 work with these bullits. I am currently getting 1 in groups at 100 yds, with the hornady RN 350's with this load.

Their web site doesn't show that having a gas check, but it looks like it's made for em, shooting that load of IMR3031 would leave considerable leading in the bore without a gas chec, I would think. If it is gas checked, I think you're good to go. Since you're in Ruger level data by Lyman data, I would back off a bit and work up to best accuracy. Let us know how they work!!

I used some in a 45-120 and after a couple of shots the barrel looked like a smooth bore.  I did not use gas checks and probably should have.  Also I don't know if the lube on those bullets is sufficient maybe someone else does.  Also some one told me the hard lead may not expand enough to fill the rifling, leading to hot gas blow by.  Anyone know?

I've shot a bunch of hard cast gas check bullets in my .45-120 BC, it still shoots great!! Up to 555gr at 1790fps, lots of recoil, but very accurate. ;)

More than likely the OT will not shoot good, unless you install gas checks.  It's easy enough to do with a Lee push through sizing die, if the bullet is actually made to accept gas checks.  A liberal coating of Liquid Alox (LLA), that comes with the kit, would help a lot too.  Hard cast bullets that lead are usually undersized for the bore, but a gas check will solve a lot of the problem of leading.

Curious about your load which .1 grain shy of max according to Hornady's 6th edition for a 1895 Marlin. Should be about 1900 fps according to Hornady out of a 22" barrel. That's the good thing about Hornady, they use real hunting rifles for their test instead of 24" test barrels with universal recievers. Bad thing is they don't give you the pressure. How's the recoil on that? Any sign of unburned powder?

I'm patiently waiting for my 45-70 and plan on using IMR 3031, mainly because I have it on hand for my 30-30's.

In answer to your questions, Yes the recoil is pretty heavy, but i have detected no signs of dangerous pressure.The load data is from the  RealGuns website and I am loading .8 less than the load given with the Hornady 350 grn rn.All the powder is burnt and the bore is clean after fireing.

Thanks FLNT4EVR, figured that load would have pretty good recoil. I've looked at RealGuns before to reference 30-30 loads but some seemed a little to hot for my taste to trust however, I've never checked the 45-70 loads.
