willis5,

Not after they explode...unless you're making stir fry.

I have a challenge to my hunting buddies. You have to come up with a test to give an armadillo where the answer is "Nope, they aren't THAT stupid!" No one has come up with the right question yet. Anyone else found the solution? (Besides exploding them with a 30-06--that is a whole new test)

I really think they are too dumb... whoever comes up with that test is really thinking outside of the box!

I guess that is one of the more polite ways to put it!:) LOL. They have come up with some good tests, but you are right, they are just too stupid.

I have some test questions for an armadilla that the answer would be --No, they aren't that stupid.
Questions: Would an armadilla vote for Al Gore in the 2000 election?
Would an armadilla be a democrat?
Would an armadilla think that any of the socialist actors
and actresses have a valid opinion about anything that is
                    morally right in this country?
Would an armadilla think that it would disappear if it was
rolled up in a ball and then jumped?
Would an armadilla fail to know how to use a voting ballot
                      in Florida?
God created man, Col. Colt made him equal.

The perfect armadillo gun...

A couple of years ago I swung down to see a high school buddy after going to the SHOT Show in New Orleans.  We hunted squirrels and armadillos for an afternoon.  I had my Kimber with me and Tim had his Ruger Single Six.  I also had one of my custom 1911s, a package we sold as the Ultimate Carry based on an Officer's frame and Commander slide, with a cut-down S & A mag well and high gripped.

I shot several armadillos with the .45 that day and was surprised to see that 230gr ball was not immediately fatal.  Each 'dillo had to be shot several times to kill it with hardball.  I had left my Hydra-Shok defensive ammo in the truck... wish I'd brought it with me to do some comparison shooting.

I'd shot a few 'dillos over the years with .22s, a shotgun, and an '06... and have been annoyed with one since I made the mistake of trying to be merciful one night while heading back to school... straddled it with my Firebird and the durn thing jumped up and broke off my speedo cable at the transmission!

While reading James's Michener's "Texas", there was a portion of the book dealing with armadillos.  In the book he claims that they found that armadillos can carry the leprosy virus.  Since they do, they are used for leprosy research.  Does anyone know if this is true?  Can armadillos carry the leprosy virus?  If so, I would be wary of handling!  I have never even heard of a leprosy case in the US.  Perhpas it has to do with better hygiene/sanitation/etc.  I think if I ever handle an armadillo, it will be with gloves and a face mask - just in case.

Just looked up the leprosy thing.  World Health Org says, because their blood is unique, "the 9-banded armadillo can be infected experimentally, and thus provides a vital source of material for research and vaccine preparation."  So, they can catch it (or be "given" it), but they don't "carry" it any more than the average human.
I think armadillos, along with possums, are just so "basic", evolution-wise, that their brain is about the size of a (small) pea ... you can pretty much fill them full of lead before they figure out they're supposed to die.

We have tons of them in Louisiana.  They aren't that "bulletproof" either.  the last one I killed was in my backyard in the middle of the night.  My dog had him cornered half way under my fence.  Since I live in a neighborhood in the city limits,  I used a 22 revolver loaded with CB caps.  Of course the range was only about 3 feet!  And by the way, at 2:00 AM in a quiet neighborhood,  a CB cap going off sounds like a cannon.  I expected to see blue lights flashing in my driveway while I was disposing of the carcass but never did.
