All of my .45-70 barrels now have Linda Lovelace throats, good enough to load the 400gr Speer FN to a COL of 2.575" in the second cannelure.

Took about 45 minutes, start to finish for all three barrels including cleanup. Cost was $27.05 plus return shipping for the reamer.

Here's a group of bullets that shows why the throating is necessary with most 350gr bullet and all 400gr and bigger bullets unless they're bore rider cast bullets.
Left to right: 300gr Speer, 300gr Rem, 405gr Rem, 400gr Speer FN, 350gr Speer FN, 350gr Hornady RN and 350gr Hornady FP Interlock, the ogive shape makes or breaks being able to load to recommended COL in a factory throat in most 45-70 H&Rs.

Excellent! I always liked the long throats in my Rugers. I used to load some real stomper loads in my #3 and the extra case capacity helped. I think that may have also been why the gun was so accurate compared to other .45-70's I've owned.

Tim, how far did you go? I took my .45-70 and .45-90 out about .240 so I can properly seat Barnes bullets.

About the same. The 400gr Barnes orginal was loading at a COL of 2.640" before the ream, COL for that bullet is now 2.880".

Looks like this Friday might be a scout trip and sight in day, but the following Wednesday for sure at the local range, things should have slowed a bit and I'll have time to set up my chrony. Neither my son(I'm a grandpa again!!) nor my huntin partner can hunt on opening day of deer season this Saturday, so I just have to make the best of it!!

I have a throated TCR rifle, One of my loads is a 300 gr. original barnes spitzer type bullet, I chronoed it at 2400 FPS. At a 100yds it will produce 1" groups. A buddy of mine barrowed it a little while back to shoot a Buffalo, he used a 400 gr. flat nose speer bullet at a moderate 1875 fps. He shot it at 150 yds, the bullet was found under the skin on the far side. The Buff jumped forwards 30 feet, stood and thaught about it for a few seconds and layed down. Lights out.

wellllll, talk about resurrecting an old topic but a good one!

I recently did this to my #1 in 45-70 (I know I know, this is a handi-thread but this is where the idea came from) and bought some of the new 325 grain leverevolution component bullets that have 2 grooves similar to the 405 grain remmy's (which I have scooting at 2300 fps using this method). My test loads are made and hopefully I get to test them soon with the chrony, can't wait!!!

I just picked up a new BC 45-70, and the throat is so short that it will not even chamber the Speer 400FP loaded to 2.55". Does anyone else see this as a factory defect?

Par for the course, most H&R 45-70s are that way, I have six H&R 45-70s now, one was rechambered to 45-120 before I ever shot it, dunno if it was short throated or not, of the other five, only one has a decent throat, the SS Ultra Hunter.

Unless someone here advises otherwise, I am going to order a Clymer throat reamer. I have a Siamese Mauser 45-70 as well as the BC and will probably get another 45-70 at sometime in the future. It is only $35 so I see no reason to rent it.

I hope the throat reamer has interchangable pilots to fit to your bore.

Both of the throating reamers I've rented from 4D were solid pilot and were used by hand, all three 45-70s and the 35 Remington are very accurate, so I guess it just depends on how well the reamer pilot fits the bore and how careful you are doing the work.

Since you're ordering the reamer, you may be able to specify the pilot size to fit your bore.

FWIW, I've rented a few chamber reamers, all reamed by hand, all but one had solid pilots, all barrels, except the 460S&W which has only been to the range once, shoot good to excellent, the one reamer that had a floating pilot, a 270 Improved, is just as accurate as any of the others, specially considering the bore is .2795" and I shoot .284" bullets in it which is the only load I've worked up so far.

The 357Max reamer that has done 49 90 rechambers so far has a solid pilot, not one member has complained about accuracy yet.

That IS reassuring! The worst case senario is only wanting to throat a nice chamber a tad and have the reamer wobblin' about because the pilot is sloppy in the initial bore......no more nice chamber. If I had a choice I would get a reamer with replaceable pilots, but I can lathe turn my own pilots for the oddballs I seem to always end up with.

I guess I was lucky. My 45-70 Handi, bought about 12 years ago, chambers my long time handload using the Rem. 405 and a COL of 2.55" ( bullet is lightly crimped right behind the "step " ) with ease and leaves no rifling marks on chambered bullets.
